Jordan Spieth’s caddie shares the one regret that continues to haunt him: ‘It brought me to tears’

Caddie Michael Greller has had a long and successful career carrying the bag for PGA Tour star Jordan Spieth. Together, they have accumulated three major titles among 13 total PGA Tour wins. However, Spieth’s career has been filled with highs and lows, with both incredible victories and painful losses. In a recent episode of The Scoop with GOLF’s Claire Rogers, Greller opened up about one particular mistake that stands out in his time on Spieth’s bag – the 2015 Open Championship at St. Andrews.

Heading into the 2015 Open at St. Andrews, Spieth had already secured wins at the Masters and the U.S. Open earlier that year. With a chance to win his third major of the season, Spieth fell short on the final two holes, missing out on a playoff spot. The moment that still haunts Greller is Spieth’s approach shot on the 18th hole, where he came up short and left himself with a difficult birdie putt. Reflecting on the decision, Greller admitted that he wished he had encouraged Spieth to play it safer and leave himself with a more makeable putt.

Greller’s emotional reaction to the loss at St. Andrews showed just how invested he was in Spieth’s success. He recalled crying after the tournament, not just because of the specific decision on the 18th hole, but also because Spieth was on the cusp of potentially winning the first three majors of the year. Despite the disappointment at St. Andrews, Spieth went on to finish solo-second at the PGA Championship that year, coming close to winning all four majors. The missed opportunity at the Open Championship continues to be a moment that Greller thinks about often.

Overall, the relationship between caddie Michael Greller and golfer Jordan Spieth has been one filled with success and challenges. While they have celebrated major victories together, they have also navigated through tough losses, such as the 2015 Open Championship at St. Andrews. Greller’s candid admission about the mistake he made on the 18th hole shows the deep emotional investment he has in his role as Spieth’s caddie. Despite the pain of that moment, Greller’s dedication to helping Spieth succeed remains unwavering, and the two continue to work together towards achieving their goals on the PGA Tour.
