Why this PGA Tour newcomer sticks to traditional ways in a high-tech world

Braden Thornberry recently secured his first Korn Ferry Tour victory at the Korn Ferry Tour Championship, which helped him earn his PGA Tour card for the first time in his career. The 27-year-old pro shot a final-round six-under 66 to clinch the victory at the Pete Dye Course at French Lick Golf Resort, marking his 104th career Korn Ferry start. Thornberry entered the tournament ranked 51st on the Korn Ferry Tour Points List, but his win allowed him to move inside the top 30 and secure a spot on the PGA Tour for the 2025 season.

As a former top-ranked amateur in the world, 2017 NCAA champion, and Fred Haskins Award winner, Thornberry is now poised to compete at the top level of professional golf. Known for his fast-paced playing style and his emphasis on feel over technical analysis, Thornberry approaches the game with a unique perspective. He believes that golf has shifted towards a more analytical and technical approach in recent years, but he prefers to rely on his instincts and react to shots based on feel rather than overthinking.

Thornberry works with instructor Scott Hamilton, although their relationship is less hands-on than is typical for many players and teachers on Tour. Thornberry prefers to focus on key areas or directions about a month before a tournament and work on them in the weeks leading up to his next start. He believes that the technical focus and perfectionism that some players adopt can take away from the enjoyment of the game and hinder performance.

The pro golfer emphasizes the importance of feeling good and having fun while on the course, noting that he plays his best golf when he is enjoying the game and playing at a faster pace. Thornberry finds that he reads putts less when he is in a good rhythm and can gain momentum by playing quickly. While he acknowledges that technical methods such as wind charts can be effective for some players, he prefers to rely on his intuition and instincts when making decisions on the course.

Thornberry’s win at the Korn Ferry Tour Championship not only secured his PGA Tour card but also highlighted his unique playing style and approach to the game. As he prepares to make his debut on the PGA Tour, Thornberry’s emphasis on feel over technical analysis sets him apart from many of his peers. With a focus on enjoying the game and playing at his own pace, Thornberry is ready to take on the challenges of professional golf at the highest level.
