Sophia Popov, the 2020 AIG Women’s British Open champion, made her on-course commentary debut for ESPN at the LPGA’s CME Group Tour Championship in Naples, Florida. The 32-year-old golfer has previously provided commentary in the booth for other networks during events like the Solheim Cup. Popov expressed her interest in pursuing a career in broadcasting and sees it as a potential future path, while still wanting to continue playing professionally for another year before transitioning into a full-time broadcasting role.

Despite having recently given birth to her daughter Maya Mae Mehles in June 2023, Popov made a successful return to the tour in March and has been balancing motherhood with her professional golf career. As an on-course commentator at the CME Group Tour Championship, she wore a headset and provided insights and analysis during the Featured Groups coverage alongside Chantel McCabe. Popov’s transition into broadcasting has been a natural progression for her, as she has always considered it as a potential career path.

The CME Group Tour Championship is a highly anticipated event that marks the end of the LPGA season, and having Popov as part of the broadcast team added a unique perspective from a current player’s point of view. The tournament, held at Tiburon Golf Club, saw Popov taking on a different role on the course, but her passion for the game and knowledge of the sport shone through in her commentary. Apart from her on-course duties, Popov also mentioned that her own game has been improving towards the end of the year, further solidifying her love for golf.

As Popov reflected on her experience as an on-course commentator, she expressed her excitement about potentially pursuing a career in broadcasting full-time in the future. While she still aims to play professionally for another year, Popov sees broadcasting as a long-term goal and is willing to make a gradual transition from playing to broadcasting. Her dedication to both roles showcases her commitment to the sport and her passion for sharing her expertise with viewers.

Joining Popov in the broadcast team for the Featured Groups coverage were Will Haskett and Amanda Blumenherst, who provided studio commentary for the event. The dynamic trio brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the broadcast, offering fans a comprehensive and engaging viewing experience. Popov’s presence as an active player turned commentator added a fresh perspective to the coverage, giving viewers an insider’s view of the game from someone who has competed at the highest level.

Overall, Popov’s debut as an on-course commentator at the CME Group Tour Championship was a success, as she seamlessly transitioned into her new role and provided valuable insights for viewers. Her passion for golf and aspiration to pursue a career in broadcasting were evident throughout the tournament, showcasing her versatility and dedication to the sport. As Popov continues to balance playing professionally with her broadcasting aspirations, fans can look forward to more engaging commentary from the talented golfer in the future.
