Australian golfer Elvis Smylie clinched his first DP World Tour title at the BMW Australian PGA Championship, holding off his golf idol Cameron Smith to secure a two-shot victory. The 22-year-old had previously won the WA Open and continued his impressive form at the Royal Queensland Golf Club. Smylie, who received the Cameron Smith Scholarship in 2019, played in the final group alongside Smith and Marc Leishman.

After sharing the lead with Smith following the second round, Smylie maintained his composure during the final round despite the challenging conditions. Smith struggled on the front nine, allowing Smylie to take a three-shot lead at the turn with a flawless 32. The son of a renowned tennis player, Smylie sank crucial par putts down the stretch to finish with a flawless 67 and a total of 14 under par, securing a two-shot victory over Smith.

Antony Quayle finished third with a closing round of 63, while Leishman also finished on 11 under. Smylie expressed his joy at securing his first professional win and the opportunity to play on the DP World Tour in the upcoming year. Playing alongside his childhood idols in the final round was a dream come true for Smylie, who acknowledged the lessons he learned from competing against them for the title.

Smylie credited his short game for securing his victory, despite some struggles off the tee. He emphasized that golf is a game of imperfection and expressed gratitude for the support of his family and team on his journey to success. With his mother watching him tearfully as he secured the win, Smylie reflected on the hard work he had put in to reach this point and expressed optimism for the future.

The BMW Australian PGA Championship showcased Smylie’s talent and determination, as he navigated the challenges of the tournament to emerge victorious. His victory over a field that included established players like Smith and Leishman solidified his place as a rising star in Australian golf. Smylie’s performance demonstrated his ability to handle pressure and deliver under difficult circumstances, setting the stage for future success on the DP World Tour.

As he looks ahead to competing on the international stage, Smylie’s win at the BMW Australian PGA Championship serves as a launching pad for his career. The experience of competing against and defeating his childhood idols will undoubtedly boost his confidence as he takes on new challenges in the professional golfing world. Smylie’s victory is a testament to his dedication and perseverance, and a sign of good things to come in his promising career.
