Cam Young’s strong mindset propels him to the top of the leaderboard at the Hero World Challenge 2024

Akshay Bhatia, a talented golfer from the United States, recently made a significant equipment change by adding a new prototype driver to his bag. While he did not disclose the exact details of his new driver, it is known that he previously used a Callaway Rogue ST MAX with a Fujikura Ventus Black 7X shaft when he emerged victorious at the Valero Texas Open earlier in the year. The new driver has lower spin rates, which has greatly improved Bhatia’s performance off the tee, especially when he hits the ball off the heel.

During the first round of the Hero World Challenge 2024 at Albany Golf Course in the Bahamas, Bhatia’s new driver proved its worth as he hit eight out of 13 fairways and shot an impressive 5-under 67, placing him in third position. While his performance in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee was average, he excelled in putting. This shift in his driver has not only impacted his game statistically but has also boosted his confidence on the tee box.

According to Bhatia, the greatest advantage of his new driver is the one-way miss it offers. He shared that previously, when he aimed down the right side with his driver, the ball would often cut to the right, causing uncertainty. Now, with the new driver, he can confidently aim right, knowing that the ball will go left if needed, providing him with greater control over his shots. This change has transformed his approach to tee shots and has enhanced his overall performance on the golf course.

Despite not topping the field in driving statistics, Bhatia’s newfound confidence with his driver has been a game-changer for him. The ability to control the ball flight and reduce the chances of errant shots has given him a mental edge during tournaments. This positive mindset, combined with his technical prowess, has the potential to elevate Bhatia’s game even further in the future.

The impact of a golfer’s equipment on their performance is often underrated but can play a crucial role in their success. In Bhatia’s case, the switch to a new prototype driver has unlocked his full potential and improved his consistency on the course. As he continues to fine-tune his game with this new equipment, it will be fascinating to see how it further enhances his skills and helps him achieve even greater heights in the world of professional golf.
