Review of the Cobra DS-ADAPT LS Driver

In 2024, Cobra’s Darkspeed range of drivers was considered one of the best in the market, but it has been replaced by the new DS-ADAPT range. The DS-ADAPT LS is the low-spin option in this new lineup. With improved aerodynamics and a new H.O.T. face, Cobra has introduced the FutureFit33 adapter sleeve, offering an impressive 33 individual settings, more than double what other major manufacturers offer. This allows golfers to adjust the loft and lie independently for optimal performance.

The Mandala guidance chart provided by Cobra helps golfers easily find the optimal setting based on their ball flight tendencies. The ability to decouple loft and lie adjustments with the new adapter sleeve is a significant advantage as it allows for more precise customization without impacting the start direction and curvature of the ball. Cobra has also addressed the issue of face angle with the SmartPad contouring system on the sole of the driver to ensure a square position behind the ball at address.

Visually, the DS-ADAPT LS driver maintains the shelf appeal of the Darkspeed range, with a rounded-off head shape. However, there are some minor criticisms, such as the lack of symmetry in the crown, which does not affect performance. During testing at Saunton Golf Club, the low spin nature of the DS-ADAPT LS driver delivered a penetrating ball flight with spin rates consistently below 2000 rpm. The forgiveness of the driver has been improved compared to its predecessor, making it less volatile on poorly struck shots.

The DS-ADAPT range is praised for its feel and acoustics, with a mid-level pitch at impact that enhances the user experience. The range offers a lively feel without being harsh, reminiscent of adding a vibration dampener to a well-strung tennis racquet. Overall, the Cobra DS-ADAPT LS driver has impressed with its softening triangular shape, increased forgiveness, and exquisite feel. The driver is available in 9˚ and 10.5˚ models with a retail price of $549/£469, and will be available for purchase starting January 17th.
