Was the Showdown a Victory for Golf?

The recently held Crypto.com Showdown between LIV Golf’s top talent Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau, and the PGA Tour’s best Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy was more meaningful than competitive. GOLF senior writers Dylan Dethier and Sean Zak discuss whether the event was a success, where it lacked, and what it means for the future of the pro game. They question whether the game of golf was the biggest winner of the match, and highlight other winners like the PGA Tour, LIV Golf, meaningful golf events, and the individual players.

Sean Zak and Dylan Dethier discuss their takeaways from the showdown, with Zak mentioning that his favorite part of the night was when the players were caught speaking to each other, their caddies, and themselves, rather than the broadcast team. They both agree that there wasn’t enough of this natural banter during the match and that players need to be more comfortable talking while they play for matches to be more engaging. They stress the importance of capturing these authentic moments to make the matches more interesting for viewers.

Dethier considers the event a success overall, enjoying the golf-first approach, the broadcast moments, the format, and the setting at Shadow Creek. However, he too acknowledges the lack of banter between the players and suggests ways to enhance interaction without making it forced. Zak expresses optimism about a potential deal between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour, citing reports of progress and the involvement of top players like Rory McIlroy. He believes that a deal can be made by March 1 and hopes for the reintegration of players back into PGA Tour events.

They both agree that there are signs of a friendlier relationship between the tours, with recent executive appointments pointing towards a new future. Despite remaining cautious, they are hopeful that the PGA Tour and LIV Golf can work towards a deal that benefits both parties. Overall, they are encouraged by the progress and the willingness of top players to drive change in the industry. They look forward to more collaborative events like the Crypto.com Showdown in the future.
