If you’re looking to improve your golf game in the new year and break 90 for the first time, it’s important to focus on your swing. Professionals in the golf industry have shared their top swing thoughts to help you achieve your goals. To simplify your thought process, focus on one key aspect in each of the following areas: driving, approach shots, short game, and putting. By implementing these pro-approved swing thoughts, you can work towards breaking 90 and improving your overall performance on the course. Here are four key swing thoughts from the pros to help you achieve your golfing resolutions in the upcoming year.

1. Driving: Get wide
To increase your distance off the tee and make the game easier, focus on widening your arc during your swing. By picturing a wide takeaway and maximizing the distance between the club and the ball, you can generate maximum speed and improve your driving performance. Tony Finau emphasizes the importance of a wide arc in driving to help amateurs hit the ball farther and achieve success on the course.

2. Approach: Small ball, then big ball
When hitting approach shots with your irons, remember to focus on hitting the small ball (golf ball) first and then making a divot after the shot. By striking down on the ball and pushing it down the target line, you can improve your iron play and increase your chances of hitting the green. Bryson DeChambeau’s advice on hitting the small ball then the big ball can help you achieve better results with your approach shots.

3. Short game: Speed in the right spot
A strong short game is essential for saving par when you miss greens. To generate speed and spin on pitch shots, use your torso to drive the shot instead of relying solely on your arms. By focusing on generating speed in the right spot at the bottom of your arc, you can improve your short game performance and increase your chances of getting up and down around the greens.

4. Putting: Keep it above the hole
When putting, especially from a distance, aim to keep the ball above the hole to improve your chances of sinking putts. By starting the putt higher and letting the ball settle closer to the hole, you can increase your likelihood of making successful putts. Padraig Harrington suggests erring on the high side of the hole to prevent the ball from working away from the cup and improve your putting performance overall.

In conclusion, by incorporating these four pro-approved swing thoughts into your golf game, you can work towards breaking 90 in the upcoming year and achieving your golfing resolutions. Focus on widening your arc in driving, hitting the small ball then the big ball in approach shots, generating speed in the right spot in your short game, and keeping the ball above the hole when putting. By implementing these key swing thoughts from the pros, you can improve your overall performance on the course and work towards breaking 90 in 2025.
