Gary Woodland, the 2019 U.S. Open winner, returned to the PGA Tour’s Sony Open last January after undergoing surgery for a brain lesion in the spring of 2023. The year following his surgery was filled with challenges, as Woodland struggled with new experiences and reminders of his difficult journey. Despite the obstacles, he managed to achieve fair results on the golf course, with some highs and lows in his performance.

Woodland’s lowest point came at the end of July during the 3M Open when he experienced symptoms that made him fear for his health. However, he and his doctors found ways to manage his condition, including medication, breathing exercises, and knowing when to rest. Woodland’s commitment to his health and well-being has led to progress, with signs of improvement in his golf game and personal life. He credits his newfound understanding of the importance of self-care for his improved performance on and off the course.

Throughout his journey, Woodland has learned valuable lessons about resilience, determination, and self-compassion. He acknowledges the difficulty of his situation but also recognizes the strength and courage it took to continue pursuing his passion for golf. By prioritizing his mental and physical health, Woodland has been able to make strides in his recovery and performance, setting himself up for success in the future.

Looking ahead, Woodland is optimistic about his golf game and believes he is in a better position now than he was in 2019 when he won the U.S. Open. With a deeper understanding of his needs and a commitment to self-care, he feels more prepared and confident than ever before. By focusing on slowing down his brain and heart rate, Woodland has seen improvements in his performance and overall well-being, leading to a sense of pride in his journey.

As Woodland continues to navigate the challenges of his recovery and return to professional golf, he remains committed to taking care of himself and prioritizing his health. By sharing his story and experiences, he hopes to inspire others facing similar struggles to persevere and seek the support they need to overcome adversity. Woodland’s resilience and determination serve as a powerful example of the importance of self-care and self-compassion in achieving success both on and off the golf course.
