Improving your golf swing doesn’t always involve swinging harder to generate more distance. In fact, over-swinging can lead to a loss of control and off-center strikes that diminish power. The key to a more efficient and powerful swing lies in controlling your tempo. By focusing on maintaining a smooth and controlled swing, you can achieve higher ball speeds and better contact with the center of the clubface. One effective way to develop a smooth-tempo swing is to practice hitting shots at around 75 percent of your maximum effort.

Reducing your swing force may seem counterintuitive, but it can lead to more efficient deliveries and center-face strikes, ultimately increasing distance and consistency in your game. The three-club drill is a great way to work on your tempo and improve your contact and ball flight. Start by selecting a target 100 yards away and choosing the club you would typically use for that distance, along with the next two lower-lofted clubs in your bag. The goal is to land shots on a designated “green” around the target, tracking your ball flight and distance control for each club.

After completing the drill and tallying your results, you may find that you were more consistent with the lower-lofted clubs. This is because the lower-lofted clubs require less effort to hit, resulting in smoother tempo and better performance. You can apply this drill to different distances and clubs, such as long irons and woods, to enhance the rhythm of your swing. By implementing this three-club drill into your practice routine, you can refine your tempo and improve your overall performance on the golf course.

In addition to practicing tempo with the three-club drill, adopting Phil Mickelson’s “aggressive contact” technique can help improve your performance on pitch shots. By focusing on hitting shots with intention and authority, you can stick 50-yard pitch shots with greater precision. Combining Mickelson’s approach with the three-club drill can enhance your overall game and provide you with the tools to excel in various shot scenarios on the golf course.

Developing a powerful and controlled swing requires mastering tempo and contact, which are essential elements of a successful golf game. By incorporating drills like the three-club drill and techniques from experienced professionals like Phil Mickelson, you can refine your skills and enhance your performance on the course. Practice consistency and efficiency in your swing mechanics to achieve higher ball speeds, improved contact, and overall distance control. Utilize these strategies in your training regimen to elevate your game and unlock your full potential as a golfer.
