Charles Howell III has been a successful professional golfer for over two decades, generating significant earnings through his time on the PGA Tour and with LIV Golf. Despite his slender frame, Howell has always been able to generate power in his swing, consistently ranking among the top 50 players in clubhead speed. In a 2005 issue of GOLF Magazine, Howell shared some of his power tips that have helped him achieve success on the course.

One of Howell’s key secrets to generating power is maximizing clubhead speed at impact. By focusing on making solid contact and shifting his weight effectively, Howell is able to release energy at the ball for maximum distance. He emphasizes the concept of “late speed,” which is essential for generating power in the golf swing. This late release of energy is a common trait among long drivers in the sport.

Howell’s power tips include techniques for addressing the ball, executing the backswing, creating lag halfway down, and unleashing power at impact. By focusing on proper hip positioning at address, setting wrists early in the backswing, maintaining lag in the downswing, and releasing speed at impact, golfers can improve their distance off the tee. Howell also provides bonus tips for each phase of the swing, offering additional insights for maximizing power.

During the backswing, Howell emphasizes the importance of wrist hinge and shoulder rotation to set up a leveraged position for the downswing. By starting the backswing with core engagement and focusing on abdominal muscles, golfers can prevent the hands and arms from taking over the swing. Maintaining the angle between the right forearm and shaft halfway down is crucial for storing energy and creating late speed through impact.

At impact, Howell recommends focusing on releasing speed through wrist unhinging and forearm rotation. By accelerating the hands and arms through the ball and releasing the upper body, golfers can maximize clubhead speed at impact for maximum energy transfer to the ball. These techniques can help golfers of all skill levels improve their power and distance off the tee.

Charles Howell III’s power tips have withstood the test of time, proving to be timeless advice for golfers looking to increase their distance on the course. By implementing his strategies for generating late speed, maintaining lag, and releasing power at impact, golfers can improve their overall performance and achieve greater success with their game. Incorporating Howell’s tips into their practice routine can lead to increased power and consistency in their golf swings.
