Tiger Woods pulls out of Genesis Invitational after mother’s passing

Tiger Woods recently announced that he will not be competing in the Genesis Invitational this week, citing that he is not ready to do so. This decision comes after the passing of his mother, Kultida, and Woods expressed that he is still processing her loss. Woods had previously announced his participation in the event just three days after his mother’s death, but has since decided to withdraw. He shared his gratitude for the support he has received and mentioned that he hopes to be at Torrey later in the week.

Woods’ mother, Tida, played a significant role in his life and golf career. He described her as a force of nature with a strong spirit and emphasized that she was his biggest fan and supporter. Woods credited her with many of his personal achievements and acknowledged the impact she had on his two children, Sam and Charlie. He expressed appreciation for the support, prayers, and privacy that he and his family have received during this difficult time.

The Genesis Invitational was slated to be Woods’ first official start since the 2024 Open Championship. He underwent back surgery in September and did not participate in the Hero World Challenge in December, an event he typically hosts. While he did play in the PNC Championship with his son, Charlie, in late December, this event only consisted of 36 holes and was played on a cart. Woods also competed in two other events since then. It is worth noting that Woods had to withdraw from the Genesis Invitational last year due to flu-like symptoms.

The Genesis Invitational, which is a Signature Event, had to be moved to Torrey Pines in San Diego instead of its usual location at Riviera in Pacific Palisades, California, due to nearby wildfires. Jake Knapp was added to the tournament field in place of Woods. Despite his absence, Woods continues to receive support and understanding from fans and the golf community as he navigates through this challenging time. His decision to prioritize his well-being and take the time he needs to grieve and heal is a testament to his resilience and commitment to honoring his mother’s memory.
