9 Things You Need to Know about the Monday Playoff at the Players Championship

Rory McIlroy and J.J. Spaun are heading into a three-hole aggregate playoff at the Players Championship, with both players finishing regulation at 12-under 276. McIlroy, a four-time major winner and 27-time PGA Tour champion, is considered a heavy favorite, while Spaun, a one-time PGA Tour winner, has consistently performed well on the tour in recent years. The playoff is set to take place on Monday morning at 9:00 a.m., with live coverage available on Golf Channel and Peacock.

The playoff will take place on the par-5 16th, par-3 17th, and par-4 18th holes at TPC Sawgrass. If the players are still tied after the three holes, they will continue playing sudden death starting at the 17th hole until a winner is determined. In the final round, the 16th hole was the easiest on the course, while the 17th was the third hardest and the 18th was the second most difficult. McIlroy and Spaun had mixed performances on these holes throughout the week.

McIlroy has a playoff record of 3-2, with his most recent win coming in the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Spaun, on the other hand, has never been in a playoff situation before. This is the sixth playoff in Players Championship history, with the most recent being in 2015 when Rickie Fowler emerged victorious. The playoff format changed from sudden death to a three-hole aggregate playoff in 2014.

A win for McIlroy at the Players Championship would make him the eighth multi-time winner of the event and secure his second victory of the season. It would also mark his 28th career PGA Tour win, moving him into a tie for 20th all-time. For Spaun, a win would be life-changing, ensuring his PGA Tour status through the 2030 season and making him the lowest-ranked Players Champion since 2017.

The winner of the playoff will take home the $4.5 million first-place prize, while the runner-up will receive $2.725 million. The payout for the winner is the richest in professional golf, highlighting the significance of the Players Championship. This playoff between McIlroy and Spaun is set to be a thrilling conclusion to a memorable tournament, with both players aiming to etch their names in Players Championship history.
