Golf Ireland has announced the arrival of the iconic Claret Jug to clubs and communities across Ireland as part of ‘The Road to The Open’ initiative. The two-week tour, which kicked off in Newtownards, County Down, will visit clubs and groups across the island of Ireland in anticipation of The 153rd Open at Royal Portrush in July. The trophy will make stops at various clubs within Down, Dublin, Kildare, Offaly, Roscommon, Wicklow, Wexford, Waterford, Cork, Kerry, Tipperary, Limerick, Galway, Mayo, Armagh, Antrim, and Donegal during its journey around the island.

Golf clubs that will host the Claret Jug will have the opportunity to enjoy a 90-minute event, giving attendees the chance to take photographs with one of golf’s most historic trophies. Golf Ireland’s Club Support Officers and local Golf in the Community Officers will be present at these events to engage with attendees and build excitement and community spirit around the visit. Golf clubs are actively working on creating inclusive and engaging opportunities to celebrate the Claret Jug’s presence.

Golf Ireland CEO Mark Kennelly expressed excitement about partnering with The R&A to bring the Claret Jug to communities across Ireland. Kennelly emphasized the significance of celebrating golf’s passion in Ireland and promoting community engagement as The Open makes its return to Royal Portrush. This initiative aims to showcase the vital role that golf clubs play in fostering community connections and leaving a lasting legacy. Golf Ireland is determined to maximize the positive impact of The Open by inspiring future generations of golfers.

The Claret Jug was also showcased at the Golf Ireland AGM in the Crowne Plaza Blanchardstown, further emphasizing the tour’s commitment to engaging with various clubs and communities. Golf Ireland’s Director of Development and Club Support, Vincent Foley, highlighted the tour as part of the organization’s dedication to grassroots engagement and support for clubs. Foley mentioned the inclusion of interactive activities such as virtual reality golf experiences and putting simulators to make golf more accessible and enjoyable for all participants.

The Claret Jug Tour, in combination with Golf Ireland’s ongoing school and community programs, reflects Golf Ireland’s long-term commitment to growing the sport and ensuring a lasting legacy from The Open tournament. This initiative aims to drive more golfers to clubs across Ireland and foster a sense of unity and excitement around one of golf’s greatest traditions. The broader goal of ‘The Road to The Open’ initiative is to create enthusiasm across clubs, schools, and communities, ensuring that the impact of The Open resonates far beyond the tournament itself.
