David Scott has been appointed as the 85th captain of the PGA.

David Scott, a 61-year-old from St Andrews, recently became the 85th Captain of The PGA, succeeding Peter Laugher. This appointment was a significant and emotional moment for Scott, who described it as “tear-jerking.” The illustrious list of past Captains includes esteemed names such as Sir Henry Cotton, Harry Vardon, James Braid, and Bernard Gallacher, among others. Scott was particularly influenced by ‘Mr Golf’ Jim Farmer, a revered PGA figure who passed away last year. As a fellow St Andrean, Scott aims to honor Farmer’s legacy during his time as Captain.

Scott’s journey to becoming PGA Captain was not straightforward. He began as an apprentice at Blairgowrie in 1982 and worked diligently for over 40 years to achieve this prestigious role. Despite not being academically exceptional, he found his calling in golf and has dedicated himself to the sport ever since. Representing 8,000 PGA members is a deeply meaningful opportunity for Scott, who acknowledges the honor and responsibility it entails.

Having served as the Director of Golf at various prominent courses, such as Kingsbarns and the Duke’s Course, Scott currently holds the position of General Manager at Dumbarnie Links. In this role, he oversees the day-to-day operations of the course and has played a key role in establishing it as a premier golf destination. Balancing his duties at Dumbarnie Links with his commitments as PGA Captain will require some juggling, but Scott is confident in his abilities and the support of his team.

Scott’s acceptance of the PGA Captaincy reflects his growth and development within the golf industry. Starting as a young professional with limited confidence and academic background, he has evolved into a respected figure in the golf community. The encouragement and guidance he received from individuals like Jim Farmer have been instrumental in shaping his career. Scott is enthusiastic about following in the footsteps of past Captains and is determined to uphold the high standards set by his predecessors.

As PGA Chief Executive Robert Maxfield noted, Scott embodies the essence of a PGA Professional. His dedication, expertise, and commitment to the sport make him a fitting choice for the role of Captain. Scott’s experience, coupled with his passion for golf, will undoubtedly contribute to the success of The PGA during his tenure. With the support of his team at Dumbarnie Links and the backing of his peers in the golfing community, Scott is well-prepared to lead the association with integrity and enthusiasm.
