Amateur Golf Legend Jay Sigel passes away at age 81

Jay Sigel, a legendary amateur golfer, passed away at the age of 81 after battling pancreatic cancer. Known as one of the best amateurs in the sport since Bobby Jones, Sigel had an impressive career with two U.S. Amateur Championships, three U.S. Mid-Amateur titles, and a record nine appearances on the U.S. Walker Cup team. He even served as a playing captain in two of those Walker Cups, leading his team to victory in 1983 and 1985. Sigel’s 18 victories in the competition remain a record, and he also holds records for matches played (33) and his playing record (18-10-5).

Born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, Sigel originally attended the University of Houston on a golf scholarship before transferring to Wake Forest on the Arnold Palmer Scholarship. Despite plans to turn professional, an injury during his college years led him to pursue a career in the insurance industry and remain an amateur golfer. He achieved his first U.S. Amateur victory in 1982 at the age of 38 and successfully defended his title the following year while also winning a U.S. Mid-Amateur title and 11 Pennsylvania Amateur titles. Sigel also competed in the Masters tournament 11 times, earning low-amateur honors on three occasions.

After turning 50, Sigel joined the PGA Tour Champions and had a successful career, winning eight tournaments between 1994 and 2003. In recognition of his contributions to the sport, he received the Bob Jones Award in 1984, the USGA’s highest honor. His impact on golf extended beyond his playing achievements, with many considering him the best amateur player since Bobby Jones.
