The valuable lesson to be learned from Camilo Villegas’ unique bag arrangement

Camilo Villegas has a unique bag setup that can teach us a lot about strategy, optimization, and maximizing performance on the golf course. Unlike many Tour players whose weaknesses are not immediately obvious, Villegas’ bag setup is built around one main goal: getting the ball in the air and keeping it there. This focus on launch and spin is something that many amateur golfers can relate to and learn from.

Villegas’ driver is a Titleist GT3 with a 11-degree loft set at 10.25 degrees, paired with a PX HZURDUS Black 60TX 6.0 shaft. This setup allows him to maximize distance and directional control while maintaining a high launch angle. His fairway woods and hybrids also feature lead tape to increase launch and spin, further enhancing his ability to get the ball in the air and keep it there.

In terms of irons, Villegas plays with Srixon ZXi5 (4-6) and ZXi7 (7-PW) with PX IO 6.5 115G shafts. His wedges are Vokey SM10 with 54/08M and 60/08M lofts, also with PX IO 6.5 115G shafts. The variety of lofts in his clubs allows Villegas to have a tool for every shot and playing condition, giving him maximum versatility and control on the course.

What sets Villegas apart is his unique approach to shaft selection. Despite needing high launch and spin, he opts for lower launch and spin profiles in his shafts but compensates with a softer flex to maintain the right balance. This attention to detail in his equipment setup shows how important it is to find the right combination of loft, shaft, and clubhead to optimize performance based on your swing characteristics.

By looking at Villegas’ bag setup, amateur golfers can learn the importance of hedging their bets and having a margin for error in their equipment choices. By ensuring that their clubs are not on the razor’s edge of perfection, players can have more consistency and forgiveness in their game. Villegas’ surplus of loft and spin is a key factor in his ability to navigate his swing tendencies and perform at a high level on the Tour.

For amateur golfers looking to overhaul their bag setup in 2025, it’s essential to consider your swing’s non-negotiables and tailor your equipment to maximize performance. Whether you struggle with hitting the ball low or need more consistency in your shots, Villegas’ bag setup can serve as inspiration for making the right choices for your game.
