6 Signs Your Fitting Specs No Longer Suit You

Is Your Golf Club Fitting Still Right for You? Here’s What to Look Out For

When it comes to golf clubs, it’s all about that perfect fit. Personally, I usually order my irons at half an inch shorter and two degrees flatter. Sounds like a solid choice, right? Well, it worked for me until I recently got fitted for a new wedge set. To my surprise, the standard length was giving me better results! This doesn’t mean my iron specs were wrong; it just proves that fitting isn’t a one-and-done deal. Think about it: our bodies change, our swings evolve, and sometimes what worked in the past just doesn’t cut it anymore.

So, if you find yourself struggling a little with your ball striking, maybe it’s time to take a second look at your fitting. Here are six signs that your specs might not be doing you any favors anymore.

1. Your Ball Flight Has Taken a Weird Turn

We all have that natural ball flight we’ve come to expect. If you used to hit a nice slight draw but now you’re blocking everything or fading it unintentionally, something seems off. It could be that your lie angle is off or maybe the shaft of your club is too stiff or too soft.

If you have access to some launch monitor data, take a compare-and-contrast session with your earlier fitting results. Make note of spin, launch angle, and face angle. If there’s a discrepancy, your equipment could be part of the problem.

2. All Your Misses Are the Same

Has it ever felt like you’ve magically transformed your bad shots into just one type of bad shot? If you once dealt with inconsistencies but now find yourself hitting thin or heel shots every single time, it might be a sign that the shaft length doesn’t fit your posture anymore.

A great way to diagnose this is by using face contact tape during practice. If you keep finding strikes low on the clubface or consistently on the toe or heel, it might be more than a swing flaw; it could be your gear.

3. Changes in Your Body or Swing

Life happens! Have you recently lost or gained weight, upped your flexibility, or altered your swing plane or tempo? All these changes can affect how your clubs work for you. Your body’s movement through the ball is different, and this can alter the dynamic lie angle too.

So, if any significant physical or swing changes have taken place, consider getting a fitting. Sometimes, even a quarter-inch difference can dramatically shift your center face contact!

4. You’ve Changed Your Course or Playing Conditions

Different courses require different gear. If you recently switched to a different course, your current club setup might not cut it anymore. When getting fitted for wedges, your fitter will usually discuss the conditions you’ll be playing in—like whether the sand is soft or hard-packed.

If you’ve switched to a course with thicker rough or lower-quality lies, the bounce and sole grind might not be working in your favor. Time to adapt!

5. Losing Distance for No Reason?

Ever feel like you’re doing everything right but the distance is just… vanishing? If you’re using the same ball and putting in the same effort but still hitting shorter shots, it could be time to dig a little deeper. Your shaft flex or kick point might not be keeping up with your swing speed anymore.

Grab some time on a launch monitor to check metrics like peak height, launch, and spin. If you notice a drop in numbers without any speed loss, your club might not be optimized for your current game.

6. Still Rocking Specs from Years Ago?

If you got fitted back in 2014 and haven’t revisited the fitting process since, it’s definitely time for a check-up. Even if you think your swing and specs are still solid, the technology and fitting equipment have come a long way since then.

Don’t worry; you don’t have to shell out for a whole new set of clubs. Sometimes, just tweaking your current setup can make a world of difference. But it’s definitely worth getting a refresher!

7. Your Friends Are Getting Better Fitting

Are your buddies getting fitted for clubs regularly and raving about their new setups? It might just be the community pressures, but if they’re getting results and you aren’t, you might want to consider jumping back into the fitting chair. A fresh set of eyes can help uncover issues that have slipped through your radar.

8. Equipment Wear and Tear

Let’s be real; clubs get worn out. If you’ve had your gear for a while, it might be showing signs of wear and can affect performance. Check your clubfaces for grooves, and inspect shafts for any signs of damage.

Even the best clubs can only withstand so much, and if yours are older or feeling off, it might be worth getting checked out to see if they’re still supporting your game.

9. Your Game Style Has Evolved

As we grow as players, our needs evolve as well. Maybe you’re hitting the gym and getting stronger or have shifted to a more aggressive swing. Whatever the case, it’s essential to assess whether your clubs are still set up for your current game style.

If your playing strategy has changed, why shouldn’t your equipment follow suit? Don’t be afraid to experiment with different specs to find out what feels right for your evolving game.

10. Final Thoughts

In the end, don’t let your club fitting hang in the past. Just because those specs worked wonders for you five years ago doesn’t mean they still do. Professionals tweak lofts and shafts regularly based on changing course conditions or performance. You should follow suit. Keep an eye on your club setup, and if you sense something’s off, don’t hesitate to get fitted again. Your game will thank you for it!

Whether you’re a seasoned player or just starting, staying on top of your golf equipment fitting is key to improving and enjoying the game. Keep swinging, keep playing, and always stay curious about what can make your game even better!
