Frankie Capan III: A Rising Star at the 3M Open

BLAINE, Minn. — Frankie Capan III, a hometown favorite, is back at the 3M Open, this time as a bona fide competitor. During his recent press conference, he shared reflections on his previous experience at the tournament and highlighted his determination to earn his spot on the PGA Tour.

Two years ago, Capan received a sponsor’s exemption to play in the 3M Open while he was a member of the Korn Ferry Tour. Although he finished tied for 62nd, that experience motivated him to improve and earn his place for future tournaments. True to his word, Capan turned down an invitation last year because he wanted to qualify based on merit. Now, as a 25-year-old rookie, he is thriving on the PGA Tour, having secured his card last season and returned to the event with a renewed sense of purpose.

Reflecting on Growth

In a candid moment during the conference, Capan revealed an interesting detail: he rewatched his press conference from two years ago the night before. "It was funny to listen to my younger self," he said. He reflected on how much his life has changed in those two years. From a sponsor’s exemption player to a rookie on the big stage, his journey speaks volumes about perseverance and aspiration in the world of golf.

Capan’s press conference lasted an impressive 30 minutes. Instead of dodging questions, he provided thoughtful and insightful responses, showcasing his growth both as a player and a public figure. “I think it’s part of my job to portray what’s going on in my head,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of communication in building a connection with fans and sponsors alike.

Local Roots and Professional Journey

Growing up in North Oaks, Minnesota, Capan spent summer months in the Twin Cities and winters in Arizona. This unique upbringing has played a significant role in shaping his golfing prowess. After stints at the University of Alabama and Florida Gulf Coast, he decided to turn pro in 2022.

Last season on the Korn Ferry Tour, Capan had a stellar performance where he recorded a 58 in a round, won the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship, and finished third in the overall season points race. These achievements allowed him to secure his PGA Tour card, further solidifying his career in professional golf. Yet, despite his success, Capan acknowledges that the transition to the PGA Tour has its challenges.

The Rookie Season Challenge

Capan’s rookie year has had its ups and downs thus far. His standout performance came at The American Express, where he tied for 12th, earning a cool $169,400. However, since then, his best finish was a third place at the Zurich Classic alongside teammate Jake Knapp. In total, he has made seven cuts in 20 starts, a testimony to both his potential and the hurdles that come with acclimating to the PGA Tour level.

He attributes some of his struggles to the "simple fundamentals" of the game, such as alignment, grip, and ball position. Capan ranks 18th in Strokes Gained: Putting but unfortunately finds himself 174th in Strokes Gained: Total, indicating that while his short game excels, he is still working on consistency overall.

Finding Stability and Learning

“I think it’s easy to feel like the world’s ending when you aren’t seeing results,” Capan reflected when discussing his current state. “It’s important to tweak a few things and stay on the right track.” His mental approach toward golf emphasizes patience and resilience, which are crucial for any professional athlete facing challenges.

During his press conference, one poignant moment arose when Capan was asked to define a successful rookie season. He took a moment, pondering the question carefully before replying, “No matter what happens, it’s going to be a successful season.” His viewpoint reflects a profound understanding of the game — viewing every setback as an opportunity for growth and learning.

Emphasizing Process Over Results

Capan’s philosophy on success involves focusing on the process rather than the outcomes. He frequently referenced this idea throughout the press conference, highlighting that genuine growth often comes from hard work and persistence. He appreciated the value of building his skills week by week while remaining excited about the opportunities that come with competing at a high level.

His mention of Scottie Scheffler’s notable press conference also stood out. Like Scheffler, Capan enjoys the grind associated with golf and understands that results will follow as long as he maintains focus on his game plan and the work required to improve.

The Road Ahead: Playoffs and Perseverance

Looking to the future, Capan faces a critical juncture in his career. With the Wyndham Championship approaching as the final stop of the PGA Tour regular season, he will need strong performances to secure his place for the playoffs and retain his Tour card for the next season.

Determined to rise to the occasion, Capan reflected on how hardships have often driven him to work harder. Having witnessed many friends transition to the PGA Tour during his Korn Ferry days, he felt a degree of urgency and motivation to improve continuously. “Things are happening for you for a reason,” he pondered, speaking on the importance of viewing each experience — both positive and negative — through the lens of personal growth.

Assessing Past Experiences

When asked to evaluate his performance during his press conference two years ago, Capan graded himself an eight or nine out of ten, indicating a sense of pride in how far he has come. "I was impressed with it," he noted, smiling. His ability to reflect on past experiences critically demonstrates not only maturation but also an understanding that learning never stops in the world of professional sports.

Conclusion: A Promising Future

Frankie Capan III’s journey reflects a dedication to hard work, resilience, and an unwavering belief in the importance of personal growth on and off the golf course. As he prepares for the 3M Open and the upcoming season’s challenges, his insights and experiences are a reminder that success isn’t merely defined by accolades but also by one’s ability to learn and adapt over time.

As he continues to navigate his rookie season on the PGA Tour, Capan’s story is one to follow. With his strong local ties and promising potential, fans will undoubtedly be cheering for him, both at the 3M Open and in the many tournaments to come.
