Andrew Johannsen Secures 4A Individual Golf Championship in Iowa

On October 14, 2025, Andrew Johannsen, a senior from Johnston High School, showcased sheer determination and skill, overcoming pressure to clinch the individual title during the Class 4A Iowa high school boys state golf tournament. The event took place on the beautiful Hyperion Field Course, where the stakes were high and the competition fierce.

Johannsen’s journey to victory was not a walk in the park. After starting the final day two strokes behind the leader, he managed to claw his way to the top, only to find himself in a three-way tie for first place as he approached the demanding 17th hole. Standing alongside him were two formidable opponents: Jaxon Adkisson from North Scott and Jonathan Ward from Waukee.

As Johannsen approached the 17th tee, he knew that to maintain his stake in the competition, a par was essential. However, under immense pressure, he executed a flawless birdie, stunning everyone in attendance and putting him back in contention as he headed into the final hole. "Those last two holes were probably the most stressful 45 minutes of my life," Johannsen remarked, illustrating the mental fortitude required in such high-stakes situations.

Mastering the Final Stretch

Finishing with a par on the 18th hole, Johannsen solidified his status as the Class 4A individual state champion, posting an impressive 36-hole score of 142, which put him one stroke ahead of his tough competitors, Adkisson and Ward, both of whom ended with scores of 143. Remarkably, Johannsen maintained a consistent performance throughout the tournament, shooting one-under-par 71 on both days.

Reflecting on his journey, Johannsen acknowledged the hard work and practice that led to his success, stating, "Luckily, with all the practice and hard work, I was able to pull through." This victory also served as redemption after a heart-wrenching loss in the previous year when he lost the title in a playoff to Cedar Falls’ Anthony Galvin.

The Road to Redemption

For Johannsen, the sensation of disappointment in 2024 was fresh in his mind. "It hurt for about a week," he recalled, expressing how that loss served as motivation for his training leading into this season. The drive to improve and excel propelled him to this moment of triumph, and it paid off in the end.

Johannsen’s victory is especially significant as it punctuates a successful period for the Johnston golf program, which has alternated between team and individual state titles over the past four years. The Dragons won the team championship in both 2022 and 2024, while fellow teammate Owen Howe took the individual title last year.

Dowling Catholic’s Team Title Triumph

Alongside Johannsen’s individual victory, the Dowling Catholic boys golf team excelled, claiming the 4A team championship with a total score of 598. They achieved a strong start on the first day, shooting 295 and building a significant lead over Johnston High—setting a solid foundation for the team to build upon in the second round.

Under the guidance of Coach Ron Gray, the Dowling Maroons demonstrated resilience after finishing sixth in the CIML meet earlier that month. Their performances at the district and now at the state level were nothing short of inspiring. After significant pivots and determination, the Maroons’ win marked a high point in their 2025 season.

Individual Accomplishments: Dowling Catholic

The Dowling Catholic team not only excelled collectively but also boasted impressive individual performances. Dewell Anderson tied for fourth with a 3-over-par score of 147, closely followed by AJ Sposato and Elijah Anderson, who also showcased their talents by finishing within the top ten. Their collective performance elevates the program’s stature and demonstrates the depth of talent being developed through rigorous coaching and support.

In a competition characterized by tight scores, Johannsen’s remarkable achievement and Dowling’s team victory reflect the caliber of golf being played at this level. To further understand the event, here are the top ten individual scores:

  1. Dowling Catholic: 295-303-598
  2. Johnston: 302-306-608
  3. Waukee Northwest: 310-300-610

The results indicate a tightly fought competition, with just a few strokes separating the top teams.

Future of Johnston Golf

In a sport where perseverance and resilience are key, Johannsen’s story highlights the potential future for Johnston’s golf program. With dedicated coaching staff and burgeoning talent, the program appears set up for continued success. Johannsen himself notes the excitement around upcoming developments, including a new foundation aimed at supporting the team financially.

Conclusion: A Season to Remember

In conclusion, the Class 4A Iowa high school boys state golf tournament not only brought forth remarkable individual performances but also showcased the essence of teamwork and dedication in high school sports. From Johannsen’s triumph to Dowling Catholic’s collective success, the event was a celebration of skill, perseverance, and the spirit of competition, leaving an indelible mark on Iowa’s high school golf history.

As the dust settles on this year’s tournament, anticipation grows for what the next season will bring, not only for Andrew Johannsen but for all the talented young golfers across Iowa.
