Mastering Greenside Bunker Shots: 5 Essential Tips for 2026

Golf enthusiasts, mark your calendars! The year 2026 could be a turning point in your game. Whether through reading expert advice, watching instructional videos, or booking lessons, there are countless ways to elevate your skills. If you’re looking to enhance your performance and escape those tricky greenside bunkers, you’re in the right place. Here are five essential tips to help you confidently tackle bunker shots this upcoming season.

1. Instantly Improve Your Putting

2. Revitalize Your Chipping

3. Add Speed to Your Swing

4. Increase Fairway Accuracy

5. Escape Every Bunker

Understanding Bunker Shots: The Key Fundamentals

To successfully escape greenside bunkers in one swing, you need to master the art of taking the right amount of sand. Many issues arise from setup mistakes, such as positioning the ball too far forward, tilting your shoulders away from the target, or aiming behind the ball. These errors can cause the clubhead to make contact with the sand too early, leading to less than desirable results.

Tim Cooke’s Five Keys to Effective Bunker Shots

Tim Cooke, a GOLF Top 100 Teacher, shares five straightforward keys to help you develop a reliable bunker shot that assures a clean strike and pops the ball out every time. Let’s dive into these essential techniques.

1. Wide Stance, Level Shoulders

Cooke advises adopting a slightly wider stance to facilitate hip hinging while maintaining a neutral spine. Ensure your shoulders remain level, as any tilt can disrupt your swing plane. This positioning will help you enter the sand cleanly and consistently.

2. Correct Ball Position

For most golfers, positioning the ball in line with the left chest—around your shirt logo for right-handed players—is ideal. This position ensures the club enters the sand at the perfect angle, enabling the ball to pop out softly and consistently land on the green.

3. Adjust Your Toe Line

Aim your feet slightly right of the target. This minor adjustment will help stabilize your lower body, preventing forward sliding and keeping your upper body from leaning back. The result? A smoother, more controlled swing through the sand.

4. Visual Focus on the Ball

As you prepare for the shot, pick a dimple on the top of the ball to focus on. This visual cue can enhance your timing as you enter the sand, reducing the likelihood of fat or thin shots and improving overall consistency.

5. Emulate a Medicine Ball Throw

Lastly, visualize throwing a medicine ball. This mental image will help your chest rotate over your lead leg while keeping your lower body stable throughout the swing.

By implementing these adjustments to your setup and swing, you can significantly reduce the occurrence of fat and thin bunker shots. Concentrate on your timing, body positioning, and maintaining a consistent swing path. With practice, you’ll be confidently splashing the ball out of any bunker like a seasoned pro.

Elevate your short game and start preparing for your most successful golf year yet.
