Brooks Koepka’s Future: Could He Join Rory McIlroy’s TGL?

Could the post-LIV phase of Brooks Koepka’s career include TGL?

After departing from LIV Golf, Brooks Koepka finds himself with an open schedule as he contemplates his next career move. While his potential return to the PGA Tour remains uncertain, Rory McIlroy has expressed an interest in seeing Koepka participate in TGL, the innovative golfing league co-founded by McIlroy and Tiger Woods.

McIlroy’s Vision for Koepka in TGL

Rory McIlroy emphasizes Koepka’s value to TGL, asserting that the five-time major champion could significantly enhance the league’s appeal. After securing a 7-5 victory for his Boston Common team over the Los Angeles Golf Club, McIlroy stated, "If there’s space on a team for Brooks to come and play, it only makes what we’re trying to do stronger. He’s been one of the best players of our generation."

However, McIlroy acknowledges that the decision ultimately lies beyond his control. "That’s up to people that are more powerful and more important than me," he added.

The Role of the PGA Tour

The PGA Tour’s involvement as a part-owner of TGL raises questions about Koepka’s inclusion. Notably, no players from LIV Golf participated in the inaugural season of TGL. Initially, Tyrrell Hatton was slated to join McIlroy’s team but was replaced by Hideki Matsuyama after leaving for LIV. Furthermore, Jon Rahm similarly withdrew from TGL prior to his move to LIV.

Koepka’s tenure with LIV Golf began in 2022, and he played four seasons before departing on December 23, 2023. In a public statement, his representatives noted his intention to spend more time with family while emphasizing that this was not the end of his competitive career. “Brooks remains passionate about the game of golf and will keep fans updated on what’s ahead,” the statement clarified.

The PGA Tour has issued a vague response regarding Koepka’s future. "Brooks Koepka is a highly accomplished professional, and we wish him and his family continued success," the Tour stated. "The PGA Tour continues to offer the best professional golfers the most competitive, challenging, and lucrative environment in which to pursue greatness."

PGA Tour’s Challenges with Returning Players

McIlroy, who once spearheaded the PGA Tour’s resistance against LIV, has softened his stance toward former LIV players. He believes that if Koepka desires to return to the PGA Tour, it should be a straightforward decision, but significant hurdles remain.

“Does it make sense if Brooks wanted to play the PGA Tour again to get him back as soon as possible? Absolutely,” McIlroy commented. However, he acknowledged legal and ethical complications: “You can’t treat one person differently than you treat others.” Koepka is still exempt from the Tour, thanks to his major wins, but past treatment of players who returned after suspensions complicates matters.

PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan previously suspended players who participated in LIV events without the needed releases. For context, Hudson Swafford has confirmed that he is currently serving a five-year suspension for competing in LIV.

A Potential Unified Future

While opinions within the PGA Tour may differ, McIlroy seems supportive of welcoming LIV stars back to strengthen the competitive landscape. "If it made the overall Tour stronger to have Bryson DeChambeau back and whoever else I would be okay with it," McIlroy stated, recognizing that such decisions are ultimately collective.

Conclusion: What Lies Ahead for Koepka?

As the 2026 PGA Tour season approaches, Koepka’s immediate future remains uncertain. However, Rory McIlroy hopes to see the major champion back on the PGA Tour, as well as engaging with the TGL platform. The upcoming months will be crucial in determining how Koepka’s career unfolds post-LIV Golf.
