Bold Predictions for Professional Golf in 2026: Insights and Speculations

As a seasoned sports reporter, I recognize that bold predictions often come with the caveat of uncertainty. Yet, reflecting on my predictions for 2025 revealed some surprising accuracy. Let’s take a moment to explore those forecasts and then dive into my bold predictions for 2026.

A Recap of 2025 Predictions and Outcomes

  1. Scottie Scheffler Will Have Four or Fewer Wins

    • Reality: I anticipated a slow start for Scheffler, but he defied expectations by securing six victories, including two majors. A lesson learned: never underestimate Scheffler’s resilience.
  2. The Europeans Will Upset the Americans at Bethpage

    • Reality: This prediction hit the mark. The European team clinched their first road Ryder Cup victory since 2012, showcasing an impressive roster depth that outperformed the Americans.
  3. Justin Thomas Will Return to Form, Winning Multiple Times (Including a Major)

    • Reality: Thomas did regain some momentum with a win at the RBC Heritage and several strong finishes. However, his major performances fell short, preventing this prediction from fully materializing.
  4. Even the Majors Will Experience TV Ratings Issues

    • Reality: The data presented a mixed bag. While The Masters drew impressive viewership, the U.S. Open struggled, marking it as the least-watched final round since 2020. Despite this fluctuation, overall viewership numbers showed growth compared to 2024.
  5. The McIlroy Major Drought Will Finally End
    • Reality: A positive outcome here, as Rory McIlroy finally captured a major championship, fulfilling my expectations.

With a score of 40% on my 2025 predictions, I’m encouraged—not bad for navigating a busy schedule, including parenthood.

Bold Predictions for 2026

As we move into 2026, the professional golf landscape is shifting, particularly between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, which seem more divergent than ever. Here are my five bold predictions for the upcoming year:

1. LIV Golfers Will Go Winless in Majors Again

Since LIV’s inception in 2022, only two of the 14 contested majors have been clinched by current LIV players. With the field thinning and top competitors struggling, I predict that no LIV golfer will secure a major title in 2026.

2. Scottie Scheffler Will Complete the Career Grand Slam

I foresee Scheffler capturing the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills. This victory would make him the seventh player to achieve a career Grand Slam, cementing his status in golf history. His recent performances in the U.S. Open indicate he will be a formidable contender.

3. Cameron Young Will Finally Realize His Potential

After a promising year, including his first Tour victory at the Wyndham Championship, Young seems poised for a breakout season. I predict he will achieve at least one win, rise into the top 10 of the Data Golf rankings, and contend in a major.

4. A Prominent LIV Player Will Look to Come Back to the Tour

Brooks Koepka, who has seen a decline in form and rankings, may consider returning to the PGA Tour. After a lackluster stint with LIV, he might seek to revitalize his career on familiar ground.

5. Tommy Fleetwood Will Finally Claim a Major

Fleetwood has consistently finished in the top ranks but has struggled to clinch a major. As he enters the prime of his career, I believe 2026 will be the year he finally breaks through. With the upcoming Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, a venue significant to Fleetwood, the stars may align for a monumental victory.

Conclusion

The future of professional golf is captivating, filled with potential and uncertainty. These bold predictions for 2026 reflect current trends and player trajectories. What are your predictions? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
