Mastering the Art of Putting: Tips and Drills for Golf Success

In the competitive world of golf, the prowess of a golfer often hinges on their short game, particularly their putting. It was back in 1981 when my team from Florida Southern University faced the daunting challenges of Hop Meadow in Simsbury, Connecticut. This tight course, with its deep rough and fast, undulating greens, proved to be a true test for our skills. At our team dinner following the initial practice round, a teammate jestingly remarked, “Well, TP, it looks like it’s not gonna be your week.” The insinuation was clear: I lacked the distance and power that seemed necessary for success on such a demanding layout.

However, I assured him that my perceived disadvantages would actually work to my advantage. While my teammates powered through drives with impressive lengths, I prided myself on my accuracy and finesse. My strengths lay not in raw power, but in my ability to drive straight, deftly execute short chips, masterful pitches, and precise bunker shots. Most significantly, I excelled at putting — a skill that often goes overlooked yet remains vital to securing a win.

As it turned out, my confidence wasn’t misplaced. By the end of that week, our team claimed the 1981 NCAA Division II National Team Championship with a staggering 35-stroke lead. Even more remarkably, I won the individual championship, largely due to my exceptional performance on the greens. This experience solidified my belief that dedication to putting practice was essential, and even today, I carve out at least 30 minutes daily for focused putting sessions. Remember, the essence of putting is primarily about feel, and without ample practice, developing this crucial skill becomes an uphill battle.

Effective Putting Drills to Transform Your Game

Over my 36 years of experience, both as a player and a coach, I’ve developed and refined several effective putting drills. These exercises can enhance your performance and transform your approach on the greens. After turning 60, I still maintain an impressive putting standard, and I’m excited to share some of my favorite drills that can help golfers at any level improve their game.

The Lag Drill: Perfecting Distance Control

The Lag Drill is a fantastic exercise aimed at improving your distance control on the greens. To set it up, place four tees in a square formation, roughly 4 feet by 4 feet. Then, step back approximately 30 feet (or around ten paces) and place another tee down. Your goal during this drill is to roll a series of balls toward the square in batches of three. Keep track of the number of consecutive successful putts; aim for 18 balls in a row without any missing the square.

This strategy has great importance: if the hole is positioned in the center of this square, your longest second putt would only be about 2 feet. Consistently achieving this level of control will dramatically decrease the likelihood of three-putts during your rounds.

The Gate Drill: Ensuring Consistent Path Alignment

While the Lag Drill focuses on speed and distance control, the Gate Drill is essential for ensuring your ball starts on the correct line. To execute this drill, you’ll need two tees positioned slightly wider than the width of a putter head. Place the ball centered between these tees and practice making solid, center-face contact with the ball. The goal is to consistently hit the ball straight, which is pivotal for every putt.

Once comfortable with this first gate, you can progress to building a second, slightly wider gate about halfway between your original gate and a hole approximately five feet away. This progression allows for more focus on making pure, accurate contact and helps cement the relationship between your putter’s face angle and the intended line.

The Importance of Routine and Mental Clarity

In addition to physical drills, developing a personal pre-putt routine can significantly influence your performance. Consistency in your routine fosters a sense of comfort and confidence on the greens. As you approach your putt, take a moment to visualize the trajectory and pace of the ball as it rolls towards the hole. This mental clarity can often result in positive outcomes.

Another vital aspect of putting involves practicing mindfulness and focus. Full concentration on the task at hand ensures fewer distractions from your surroundings or previous missed putts. Developing mental resilience in your approach can often distinguish successful golfers from their peers.

Embracing Technology in Your Practice

Today’s technology offers valuable resources to aid in your putting practice. From apps that analyze your stroke to sophisticated putting mats with built-in feedback mechanisms, embracing these tools can provide insights that are otherwise challenging to identify. Track your progress and tweak your technique accordingly to boost your confidence on the greens.

Engaging with a Mentor

Having a mentor or coach can significantly impact your game. Their experience can provide an outside perspective on your putting technique, identifying areas for improvement you may have overlooked. Regular sessions with a more experienced player or pro can be invaluable, ensuring you not only refine your skills but also gain insights from their experiences on the course.

Putting for Success: The Final Words

As we look back on the elements that contribute to successful putting, it’s clear that a combination of consistent practice, strategic drills, and mental preparation will cultivate a great putting game. Just as I discovered years ago during that championship week in Connecticut, potential lies not solely in distance and strength but also in precision and skill.

For those golf enthusiasts looking to sharpen their putting proficiency, the drills mentioned in this article can serve as powerful assets. Build a daily routine filled with practice, engage with new technology, and consider the importance of mental preparation. Whether you’re an amateur or a seasoned player, all golfers have the opportunity to excel in their game through dedicated effort on the greens.

By implementing these practices into your routine, you may soon find yourself, much like I did all those years ago, confidently sinking putts under pressure and enjoying the sweet taste of victory. Embrace the art of putting, and watch as your game reaches new heights on the golf course.
