LPGA Adjusts Schedule Amid Extreme Cold in Central Florida

As central Florida braces for an extreme cold watch this weekend, the LPGA has made necessary scheduling changes for its season-opening event, the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions.

Severe Weather Conditions

A freeze watch is in effect for the Orlando area from 7 p.m. on Saturday until 1 p.m. on Sunday. Overnight temperatures are expected to plunge to 24 degrees, with a forecast high of only 47 degrees on Sunday. Wind gusts could reach up to 25 mph, further complicating playing conditions.

Impact on Final Round

Due to the severe cold, final-round tee times have been pushed significantly back. The field will now consist of 60 participants, which is a reduction of 10 groups, equating to 30 fewer players. Notably, the 39 LPGA professionals will not be affected, while the celebrity field has been trimmed to 21 players. Additionally, no amateurs will compete on Sunday.

Broadcast Changes

Fans hoping to watch the tournament’s conclusion may need to adjust their plans. NBC’s coverage will be disrupted by track and field broadcasting at 4 p.m., shifting the coverage of the tournament to the Golf Channel for the final moments.

  • Sunday Coverage Schedule:
    • 1 – 2 p.m. ET: Peacock
    • 2 – 4 p.m. ET: NBC
    • 4 – 6 p.m. ET: Golf Channel

Weekend Weather Forecast

While Friday’s weather at Lake Nona Golf and Country Club is expected to be mild, with temperatures rising to the low 70s, conditions will worsen. Here’s a breakdown of the weekend forecast:

  • Friday: High of 60°F in the mid-morning, low 70s by early afternoon.
  • Saturday: High of 56°F, with wind gusts up to 35 mph.
  • Sunday: Morning temperatures dipping to as low as 24°F.

Players’ Reactions

Top players have commented on the harsh conditions. World No. 1 Jeeno Thitikul described the weekend forecast as brutal, saying, “Saturday should be really windy, and then Sunday, I don’t even know if we can be able to play. The golf ball would be like ice on it, so we’ll see.”

Charley Hull also shared her experience, recalling a moment in the locker room, stating, “I went into the locker room and put the hair dryer on myself… I was like, honestly, I’m froze.”

Conclusion

With unpredictable weather impacting the LPGA, fans and players alike are adjusting their expectations. As the tournament continues, all eyes will be on how competitors handle the conditions at the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions.
