When it comes to putters, weight is a crucial factor that can greatly impact a player’s performance on the green. Typically, putters have a head weight in the range of 345-365 grams, along with a standard shaft and grip weight. However, for players at the Hot List, the focus is more on the feel of the putter in hand rather than the actual weight in grams or ounces. This feel, known as “heft,” is determined by various factors such as swing weight, balance point, and overall stability during the stroke.

To assess the heft of each putter, players at the Hot List rated them on a scale of “1” (light) to “5” (heavy). Putter models were evaluated separately by players, with blade putters rated on one day and mallet putters on another. A rating of “1” indicated a very light feel that made it challenging to sense the head’s position during the stroke, while a rating of “5” suggested a cumbersome or unwieldy feel. The ratings provided valuable insights into how easy it is to control a specific putter or a particular family of putter models.

As players assessed the putters, it became apparent that the heft ratings tended to cluster on either side of the midpoint between heavy and light. This clustering was likely due to the 32 player panelists providing consistent ratings across the putter models. When the ratings leaned towards one side, it indicated a common feeling that average golfers would recognize as well. The heft of a putter plays a significant role in how comfortable a player feels while using it, affecting their confidence and performance on the green.

In this year’s Hot List, the heaviest and lightest feeling blade and mallet putters were highlighted based on player evaluations. The putters that received high ratings for being heavy typically offered more stability and resistance to manipulation during the stroke, providing a sense of control and confidence to the player. On the other hand, putters rated as light tended to be more maneuverable but could potentially lack the stability needed for consistent putting performance. By showcasing these putters, players can gain insights into which models may align best with their personal preferences and putting style.

Ultimately, the heft of a putter can greatly impact a player’s overall performance on the green. Finding the right balance between weight and feel is crucial for achieving consistency and confidence during each putt. By considering the feedback from player evaluations on the heft of various putter models, golfers can make informed decisions when selecting a putter that suits their preferences and playing style. Whether opting for a heavier, more stable putter or a lighter, more maneuverable one, the key is to find a putter that feels comfortable and promotes a fluid putting stroke for improved results on the green.
