The 3-wood in your bag may be causing more harm than good

Many golfers have a 3-wood in their bag without realizing that they might be better off with a higher lofted fairway wood. The misconception that less loft equals more distance is debunked by experts in the field. The angle of descent plays a key role in determining distance, and most players do not have the landing angle required for a 3-wood to be effective. Players with slower swing speeds or insufficient launch and spin on their shots may actually hit the ball shorter with a 3-wood due to the lack of height and spin.

The technology in fairway woods has evolved over the years, with 3-woods becoming longer and more challenging for the average player to hit effectively. The pursuit of maximum distance often came at the expense of height, leading some to refer to the TaylorMade RocketBallz as “RollerBallz.” Higher lofted fairway woods have been proven to carry farther for many players and provide more forgiveness due to the increased backspin and playable flight. Playing a 4-wood or 5-wood may result in distance gains and improved performance for most golfers.

Even tour pros are recognizing the benefits of higher lofted fairway woods, with players like Tommy Fleetwood and Dustin Johnson opting for 5-woods and 7-woods in their bags. These players understand the advantages of using higher lofted clubs for improved performance and playability. The larger clubface and added confidence that comes with high lofted fairway woods often lead to better contact and more consistent shots.

While some players may still prefer the challenge of hitting a 3-wood off the deck in hopes of reaching a short par-5 in two shots, the majority of golfers would benefit from switching to a higher lofted fairway wood. The misconception that a 3-wood is the best choice for distance is outdated, and players should consider the benefits of using a 4-wood or 5-wood instead. Higher lofted fairway woods provide a more playable flight, increased forgiveness, and improved performance for most golfers. Consider making the switch to a higher lofted fairway wood to enhance your game on the course.
