Notah Begay III aims to demonstrate his expertise as a golf analyst during try-out for NBC

Notah Begay III, a former professional golfer and current NBC golf analyst, has long been associated with Tiger Woods due to their friendship from their days at Stanford University. However, Begay has worked hard to establish an identity beyond being known solely as the “Tiger guy” in his role at NBC. After a successful playing career on the PGA Tour, Begay joined NBC in 2012 and has since taken on various roles in commentary and analysis. Now, he is getting his first opportunity as the lead analyst for an entire tournament at the Valspar Championship.

Begay acknowledges that this weekend at the Valspar Championship is an audition for the full-time analyst position at NBC following Paul Azinger’s departure. He is aware of the pressure that comes with this opportunity, but as a former professional athlete, he is no stranger to handling pressure situations. Begay believes in being scrutinized and evaluated in order to improve his performance and rise to the occasion during big moments.

Despite the pressure and potential outcomes of the audition, Begay remains focused on being a team player and supporting the decisions made by NBC, even if he is not selected for the role. He credits his colleagues, including lead producer Tommy Roy, for helping him develop as a TV personality and hone his interviewing skills when interacting with players on air. Begay is excited about the “reboot” at NBC and the opportunity to bring a younger, more diverse energy to the broadcast team.

As a Native American with roots in Navajo, San Felipe Pueblo, and Isleta Pueblo communities, Begay values the opportunity to represent his heritage and community in his role at NBC. He sees himself as a positive role model for other Native American youth who may be considering careers in broadcasting or journalism. Begay believes that his unique perspective and diverse background can bring a fresh voice to the golf broadcasting world.

Begay’s investment in all aspects of the game, from junior golf to PGA Tour Champions, sets him apart from other potential analysts. His close connections with players of all generations allow him to maintain a critical respect for the sport and provide valuable insights in his analysis. Begay remains focused on surprising people at the Valspar Championship and demonstrating his skills to the decision-makers at NBC.

While the competition for the full-time analyst position is stiff, with other candidates like Kevin Kisner, Brandel Chamblee, and Luke Donald in the running, Begay is determined to make an impression and show that he has what it takes to succeed in the role. With his unique combination of experience, diversity, and passion for the game of golf, Begay hopes to elevate his status within the golf and TV community and continue making a positive impact in the sport.
