Big-name golfers, including Max Homa and Chris Kirk, fail to make the cut at 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge

Pierceson Coody, a rising star in the golf world and a former University of Texas standout, had a special week at the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas. Coody, who received a sponsor invite to the tournament thanks to his grandfather’s connections to TCU and Colonial, made the most of the opportunity by maneuvering his way into a tie for second place at the tournament’s midpoint. Coody expressed gratitude for his grandfather’s relationships and the tournament organizers for allowing him to play, as his status wasn’t good enough to qualify on his own merit.

However, while Coody flourished at the Challenge, some big names in golf failed to make the cut after the first two rounds. Beau Hossler struggled with three bogeys on his first nine during Friday’s round, sealing his fate and preventing him from advancing. Similarly, Harris English had a disappointing finish, with two bogeys and a triple in the final six holes, falling two shots short of the cutline. Taylor Moore, who had only missed one cut all year, posted five bogeys on the front nine on Friday, leading to his second missed cut of the season.

Chris Kirk and Ryan Palmer also fell short of expectations at the Challenge. Kirk’s performance was lackluster, and Palmer, despite potentially having inside knowledge from assisting in the course redesign, struggled with five bogeys and a double on his first nine holes during Friday’s round. Max Homa, on the other hand, used the opportunity of the second round to improve after posting a disappointing score of 78 in the opening round. Homa finished the second round with a 69, showing improvement from the previous day.

The Charles Schwab Challenge provided an exciting and competitive environment for golfers of all levels, with Pierceson Coody rising to the occasion and making the most of his sponsor invite. The tournament also showcased the unpredictable nature of golf, as experienced players like Harris English and Ryan Palmer struggled to meet expectations and missed the cut. Despite the challenges, the Charles Schwab Challenge offered a unique opportunity for emerging talents like Coody to shine and make a name for themselves on the professional golf circuit.
