Expert in equipment believes that the focus should shift from “fitting” to “optimization”

Custom fitting has become increasingly important in golf club selection, yet a majority of everyday players remain unoptimized for the clubs in their bags. According to Chris Marchini, director of golf experience for Golf Galaxy and Dick’s Sporting Goods, while 1 in 5 golfers with handicaps of 20 or less seek club-fitting specialists for their next purchase, only 1 in 10 do so when their handicaps are higher. This suggests that new golfers entering the game are less likely to be fit for clubs.

During a recent appearance on Golf Digest Happy Hour, Marchini discussed various topics related to club fitting, from smash factor to shaft length to the importance of finding the right clubs. He emphasized the concept of optimizing a player’s equipment rather than simply fitting them for clubs. Marchini believes that fitting is evolving and becoming more individualized, with each golfer having a unique journey that requires personalized attention from a fitter.

Marchini highlighted some common obstacles to club fitting, such as misconceptions about not being good enough or consistent enough. He encouraged golfers to approach fitting with an open mind and to focus on aesthetics, sound, and feel rather than getting caught up in brand loyalty. It is essential for golfers to communicate their goals and aspirations with their fitter, allowing for a more personalized and effective fitting experience.

One key piece of advice from Marchini is to embrace curiosity during the fitting process. By asking questions and engaging with the fitter, golfers can gain a deeper understanding of how their equipment can impact their performance on the course. Marchini stressed the importance of the relationship between fitter and golfer, emphasizing the value of personalized attention and connection in the fitting process.

For those interested in learning more about club fitting and optimizing their equipment, Golf Digest offers a range of resources, including live webinars and Happy Hour sessions with industry experts like Chris Marchini. These resources provide valuable insights and advice for golfers looking to improve their game through personalized club fitting. By staying informed and engaged, golfers can enhance their playing experience and performance on the course.
