National Links Trust Announces New Municipal Golf Project Amid D.C. Uncertainty

The Growing Concerns Over Public Golf in D.C.

Recent developments in Washington, D.C. have left many advocates of public golf feeling disheartened. The Department of the Interior’s decision to terminate the National Links Trust’s lease on three historic municipal courses—Rock Creek, East Potomac, and Langston—has sparked widespread disappointment. This decision came shortly after former President Donald Trump floated the idea of taking over the courses, raising significant concerns regarding affordability and the preservation of these historic golf designs.

A New Chapter for National Links Trust

In a welcome turn of events for the public golf community, the National Links Trust has announced a promising new project on the West Coast. Partnering with the Friends of the Port Townsend Golf Park, the nonprofit aims to enhance Camas Prairie Park, a historical public golf property located approximately 60 miles north of Seattle.

Details About Camas Prairie Park

  • Formerly Known As: Port Townsend Golf Club
  • Established: 1904
  • Facilities Include:
    • 9-hole golf course
    • Driving range
    • Disc golf
    • Walking trails
    • Restaurant
    • Nature preserve
  • Lease Extension: Recently secured a 20-year extension through 2025.

Under this new arrangement, the National Links Trust will lead the development of a comprehensive master plan aimed at enhancing affordability, environmental sustainability, and community access. A highlight of this initiative will be the construction of a Himalayas-style putting course, supported by a generous $250,000 grant from a family foundation.

Clarification on D.C. Developments

Trust officials have stressed that the partnership with Port Townsend has been in the works for several months, emphasizing that it is not a reaction to the recent lease termination in D.C.

“While it might seem like we’re pivoting to a post-D.C. future, that isn’t the case,” a spokesperson for the Trust stated. “We are pursuing both paths simultaneously.” They indicated that the Port Townsend collaboration represents a significant step toward establishing a national presence.

The Future of Municipal Golf in Washington, D.C.

The uncertainty surrounding the National Links Trust’s future in Washington, D.C. remains evident. Founded in 2017 to revitalize the aforementioned courses, the Trust, under the guidance of renowned architect Tom Doak, has made extensive capital improvements, investing over $8.5 million since taking over operations in 2020. Despite the lease revocation, there has been an increase in both revenue and rounds played, with green fees consistently among the lowest in major municipal systems.

After the lease termination, the National Links Trust expressed its devastation and disputed claims from the Trump administration that it had been in default.

What Lies Ahead?

President Trump has indicated an intent to maintain affordable golf for local players and is reportedly considering hiring architect Tom Fazio for a redesign of the courses. While no formal plans have emerged to date, the National Links Trust continues to manage operations amidst the uncertainty.

“We remain eager to be involved in D.C.’s golf future,” a spokesperson remarked. “However, the ambiguity complicates staffing, budgeting, and long-term planning. The Camas Prairie Park project signifies our commitment to preserving high-quality, affordable golf.”

Conclusion

As the National Links Trust diversifies its efforts through the Camas Prairie Park project, it remains determined to champion public golf despite challenges in Washington, D.C. With a focus on sustainability, affordability, and community engagement, the Trust is poised to make a lasting impact on the future of municipal golf across the nation.
