The U.S. Adaptive Open is a unique golf championship that caters to athletes with visual impairment or those who are seated, offering them a fair test on the golf course. The tournament recently took place at Sand Creek Station in Kansas, a course specifically chosen for its ability to handle the challenges presented by adaptive athletes. This marked the third edition of the championship, with the previous two held at Pinehurst No. 6 in North Carolina. The tournament will continue to rotate locations, with upcoming events planned at Woodmont Country Club in Maryland, allowing athletes to compete closer to home.
The move to Sand Creek Station provided local athlete Kirk Holmberg with the advantage of playing a de facto home game, as he lives just 30 minutes away in Hutchinson. Holmberg, competing in the Neurological Impairment category, expressed the benefit of being able to sleep in his own bed and play on a course he was familiar with. Despite an opening round of 81, Holmberg finished strong with six consecutive pars, showcasing his resilience and competitive spirit. With his son as his caddy and his wife and friends in tow, Holmberg appreciated the opportunity to compete close to home.
The opening day of the U.S. Adaptive Open saw 2023 overall men’s champion Kipp Popert from England take the lead with an impressive 7-under 65. He holds a two-shot advantage over Spain’s Juan Postigo in the lower limb impairment category. Additionally, ten men’s players finished under par in the first round, highlighting the competitive nature of the tournament. On the women’s side, Bailey Bish from Arizona leads the way with a 3-under 69, holding a six-shot lead over past champions Kim Moore and Ryanne Jackson in the neurological impairment category.
The U.S. Adaptive Open provides a platform for adaptive athletes to showcase their skills and compete at a high level, challenging traditional notions of golf competition. The tournament’s unique format and inclusion of various impairment categories make it a standout event in the U.S. Golf Association’s lineup of championships. Moving forward, the championship will continue to offer athletes opportunities to compete in different locations, fostering a sense of community and accessibility for all participants. As the tournament progresses, athletes like Kirk Holmberg and Kipp Popert will look to continue their strong performances and set the standard for adaptive golf excellence.
