The University of North Florida recently announced the addition of Tyler Gulliksen as the new assistant golf coach for the men’s team. Gulliksen’s hiring completes a reorganization of the men’s and women’s golf programs under director of golf Scott Schroeder. Schroeder, who was the men’s coach for 18 years, now oversees both teams, with former UNF player Courtney Cobb as the associate head coach for the women’s team and former Osprey player Michael Mattiace as an assistant for both teams.

Gulliksen, a native of Ormond Beach, Florida, brings a wealth of experience to the UNF program. He previously served as a volunteer assistant for three years at the University of San Diego under former PGA Tour player Chris Riley. In addition to his coaching experience, Gulliksen is a decorated golfer and serviceman. He is a 2010 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and earned a master’s degree from USD. Gulliksen spent over 12 years in the Naval Special Operations Community as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Officer, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

During his time in the military, Gulliksen completed multiple tours to the Middle East and North Africa as part of the U.S. Global War on Terrorism. Despite his demanding military career, Gulliksen continued to excel in golf. He has numerous accolades, including winning the 2024 Florida State Golf Association Four-ball with Ty Capps, finishing as the runner-up in the Florida Amateur, and reaching the semifinals of the FSGA Mid-Amateur. Additionally, Gulliksen and Capps have claimed the last two FSGA Two-Man and Foursomes Championships, bringing their total FSGA titles to five.

Scott Schroeder, the director of golf at UNF, praised Gulliksen’s abilities both as a player and a coach. “He still plays at a very high level in the state [amateur] game, so he brings a bunch of great attributes to the program,” Schroeder said in a statement. With Gulliksen’s strong background in golf and leadership skills honed during his military service, he is expected to make significant contributions to the UNF golf program.

The addition of Gulliksen to the coaching staff is part of UNF’s commitment to building a strong and competitive golf program. With a team of experienced coaches and talented players, the Ospreys are well-positioned to achieve success in the NCAA competition. Gulliksen’s presence will not only benefit the men’s team but also create a positive impact on the women’s team, as the entire golf program at UNF continues to grow and thrive.

As the assistant coach for the UNF men’s team, Gulliksen will work closely with Schroeder and the players to enhance their skills, strategy, and overall performance on the golf course. His unique blend of golf expertise and leadership experience from his military background will undoubtedly provide valuable insights and guidance to the team. Under Gulliksen’s mentorship, the Ospreys are poised to reach new heights and achieve their goals in collegiate golf competition.
