Bandon Dunes Celebrates 25 Years: Golf Instructor Grant Rogers Reveals Key to Success on the Course

Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Oregon is celebrating its 25th anniversary and is known for its challenging links golf courses. Grant Rogers, the director of instruction emeritus at the resort, has been helping players understand and navigate the unique demands of links golf for over two decades. He specializes in teaching players how to hit shots off tight lies, use different clubs for unconventional shots, and play strategically in the wind.

Rogers shares that many golfers who visit Bandon Dunes are serious about their game but may undervalue the importance of putting. He emphasizes the need for golfers to practice their putting and work on their chipping and pitching skills in order to improve their overall game. Rogers also highlights the importance of being able to think strategically on a links course, as many holes at Bandon Dunes are short but require precise shot-making and decision-making.

Rogers reflects on his initial impressions of Bandon Dunes in 2000 when the resort was still under construction. He was introduced to the course by a friend and was immediately struck by the scenic views and challenging layout, particularly the fifth hole, a par-4 perched atop a cliff. His passion for the course led him to play regularly, eventually earning him a job at the resort as an instructor.

One unique aspect of Rogers’ experience at Bandon Dunes is his impressive record of holes-in-one. He has a total of 21 holes-in-one, with 17 on the Preserve course and four on the main courses. He even made five holes-in-one with a putter from the tee on the steeply downhill 13th hole of Bandon Preserve during a clinic for golf professionals from the Pacific Northwest.

As Bandon Dunes celebrates its 25th anniversary, the legacy of the resort continues to thrive under the leadership of individuals like Grant Rogers who are dedicated to helping players improve their game and appreciate the challenges and beauty of links golf. Whether it’s teaching new golfers how to navigate tight lies or showcasing his own skills with multiple holes-in-one, Rogers is a testament to the spirit and passion that defines Bandon Dunes Golf Resort. For golfers looking to embark on a trip of a lifetime to Bandon Dunes, Rogers’ insights and expertise are invaluable in helping them make the most of their experience on the renowned links courses.
