Bryson DeChambeau Plans to Adjust Approach to Links Golf

Bryson DeChambeau, known for his unique and analytical approach to the game of golf, has been rethinking his strategy when it comes to playing links golf. Despite having a successful run through the year’s first three majors, with a T6 finish at the Masters, a second-place finish at the PGA Championship, and a win at the U.S. Open, DeChambeau struggled at Royal Troon and missed the cut at the Open Championship. This isn’t the first time he has faced difficulties overseas, with only one top-30 finish in seven starts at the Open.

DeChambeau openly admitted his struggles at the Open Championship, acknowledging that he has always found it challenging to perform well in wet, windy, and nasty conditions. He highlighted the need to adapt his game to suit the conditions typically found at links courses, indicating that he needs to work on controlling shots, flighting shots, wedge shots, and practicing in windy conditions to improve his performance at such events.

The golfer’s approach to the game involves trying to hit the same shot shape every time, preferring consistency over changing his approach based on the situation. However, DeChambeau recognizes the need to adapt to the conditions at links golf courses and is focused on improving his game to give himself a better chance at success in such environments. This adjustment represents a shift towards accepting more conventional wisdom in his game, showcasing his willingness to learn and evolve as a player.

DeChambeau’s willingness to acknowledge his weaknesses and make changes to his game is reflective of his recent development as a player. He has learned from past experiences, including adjusting his training and practice routines to avoid health risks and improve his performance. Additionally, he has shown admiration for his competitor Xander Schauffele, praising his consistency and success in major championships. DeChambeau sees Schauffele as a role model for consistent performance and aims to emulate his success in the future.

Despite facing challenges at the Open Championship and reevaluating his approach to links golf, DeChambeau remains optimistic about his growth as a player. He understands the importance of learning from mistakes and adapting his strategies to suit different conditions. As he continues to refine his game and work on improving his skills, DeChambeau is focused on achieving success in future tournaments, including the Open Championship. The golfer’s willingness to evolve and learn from his experiences sets him apart as a competitor striving for excellence in the sport.
