When it comes to golf club regulations, the Rules of Golf can be quite tricky to navigate. Thankfully, the Rules Guy is an expert on all things rule-related in the golf world. If you have a question about the rules, he has all the answers. One common question that golfers often have is regarding listing yardages on their clubs. For example, a golfer may want to add a piece of tape to their irons with the average distance they hit that particular club. However, is this practice legal according to the rules?

According to the Rules Guy, adding tape to your clubs with yardages or other information is considered an external attachment, which is not allowed under the rules of golf. Making a stroke with a club that has been altered in such a way would result in immediate disqualification under Rule 4.1a. Instead of using tape on your clubs, the Rules Guy suggests keeping a piece of paper with your club distances in your pocket, which is a legal alternative. Additionally, aligning your hands on the club properly is also important for your game, so focus on proper grip technique rather than external attachments.

Another common question that golfers have is related to drawing lines on their balls to help with putting. If a shot smears the line, can the ball be replaced immediately or must the player wait until the hole is finished? According to the Rules Guy, a smudged line on the ball does not give the player the right to replace the ball immediately under Rule 4.2. Players must wait until the hole is finished before replacing a ball, even if the line is smeared during a shot.

In another scenario, a golfer asks if it is legal to add tape to their putter and draw a line on it with a Sharpie. The Rules Guy explains that tape affixed to a putter is considered a nonconforming external attachment and renders the club nonconforming. Making a stroke with a club that has been altered in this way would result in disqualification under Rule 4.1a. Therefore, it is important for golfers to adhere to the rules when it comes to modifying their clubs, even in seemingly minor ways.

For golfers looking to improve their game and navigate the rules of golf more effectively, the Rules Guy suggests picking up a custom Green Book from Golf Logix. These Green Books can provide valuable information and insights to help golfers better understand the layout of their home course and make strategic decisions on the greens. If you have any questions about the rules of golf, don’t hesitate to reach out to the Rules Guy for guidance. Send your queries, confusions, and comments to rulesguy@golf.com, and he will be happy to assist you without throwing the book at you.
