Golf rules can be confusing, but the Rules Guy is here to help. Whether you have questions about taking relief from a cart path or using preferred lies during a competition, the Rules Guy knows all the answers. Let’s dive into some common scenarios and get clarity on how to navigate them according to the Rules of Golf.

When a player’s ball comes to rest on a cart path, they have the option to play it as it lies or take relief. If a player chooses to play from the cart path and hits the ball out of bounds, they must play again from the cart path based on the spot of the previous shot. However, they are allowed a one club-length relief area to drop into if they choose to play from the previous spot, as per Rule 14.6. If there is still interference from the cart path after the drop, the player can take free relief under Rule 16.1.

In the case of using preferred lies during a competition, a player is allowed one club-length relief under the Local Rule. However, if the player then encounters interference from a cart path that was not present on their original lie, they are allowed to take relief under Rule 16.1b. It is recommended that preferred lies only be used in certain areas of the course to prevent players from gaining an unfair advantage by avoiding obstacles such as cart paths.

Navigating the rules of golf can be challenging, especially when it comes to determining the proper course of action in various situations. Understanding when and how to take relief from obstacles like cart paths is essential for fair play and maintaining the integrity of the game. By following the guidelines set forth in the Rules of Golf, players can ensure that they are making informed decisions on the course and playing according to the established standards.
