Cowdray unveils new par-3 golf course

Cowdray Golf Club in West Sussex has recently opened a new par-3 course, marking the end of a year of significant investment in their golf experience. The short course features five new USGA specification greens and greenside bunkers, each resembling a similar green complex on the main course at Cowdray. Additionally, a new short-game area has been added, complete with a practice green and bunker.

To cater to the local community and individuals interested in learning the game of golf, Cowdray has introduced a new Academy Membership category for the Par-3 Course. This membership includes unlimited play on the Par-3 Course, access to practice facilities, preferential rates for the driving range, and introductory golf lessons. Prices for this membership start at £300, while visitor green fees for juniors begin at £10.

The par-3 layout was officially opened by Cowdray’s greenkeeping team, led by course manager Jonathan Smith. This team was the first to experience the course they had worked hard to perfect. According to Tim Allen, the director of golf at Cowdray, the new academy set-up has been in the works for some time and seeing it come to life is thrilling. This facility is aimed at engaging with the local community and schools, making golf more inclusive and accessible to a wider audience.

In addition to the Par-3 Course, Cowdray has made significant improvements to its 18-hole downland course. Swan Golf Designs, led by William Swan, spearheaded these transformations which included the reconstruction and reshaping of all bunkers, integrating them into the downland landscape with native grass borders. A new ninth tee and EcoPath recycled rubber pathways have been installed throughout the course.

Swan Golf Designs also restored the double green for holes seven and 14, created a new seating area at the halfway hut, and managed the landscape throughout the course. These improvements add to the overall golf experience at Cowdray and demonstrate their commitment to enhancing the game for members and visitors alike.

The investment and improvement plan at Cowdray Golf Club reflect their dedication to providing top-notch facilities and experiences for golf enthusiasts. The addition of the Par-3 Course, alongside the enhancements to the main downland course, showcases Cowdray’s commitment to growth and inclusivity within the local community and beyond. With state-of-the-art facilities, expertly designed courses, and a focus on engagement and education, Cowdray Golf Club is poised to become a premier destination for golfers of all levels.
