Discover 2026’s elite golf escapes and elevate your game.

Hello, Daily Duffer readers! Sarah Chen here, your golf instruction editor. I’ve spent over 15 years on the range, working with everyone from aspiring tour pros to weekend warriors, and I genuinely believe that with the right guidance, anyone can elevate their game. Today, I want to talk about something crucial that often gets overlooked: how our environment and mindset profoundly influence our performance on the course.

I just read an fascinating article about the “2026’s Premier Golf Retreats,” showcasing incredible destinations like Reynolds Lake Oconee and Bandon Dunes. What struck me most was not just the immaculate courses, but the deep connection these places foster between the golfer and their surroundings. As the article states, “the modern traveler demands a total sensory immersion where architectural masterpieces meet hyper-personalized hospitality.” This isn’t just about luxury; it’s about creating an optimal mental and physical space for golf, and that’s a lesson we can all bring to our home course.

Beyond the Swing: The Power of Environment and Mindset

We spend countless hours perfecting our swing mechanics, chipping touch, and putting stroke – and rightly so! But what if I told you that where and how you practice, and your mental approach before and during a round, are just as vital? The article highlights how these premier destinations are about more than just golf; they’re about “a cultivated sanctuary for those who view golf not just as a sport, but as a gateway to the world’s most exclusive landscapes.” This concept of a ‘sanctuary’ isn’t limited to five-star resorts. You can create your own mental sanctuary anywhere.

Reynolds Lake Oconee (Greensboro, Georgia)

Think about a course like Bandon Dunes, described as “unplugged, walking-only, and beautifully rugged.” The article notes that there are “no distractions here—just cozy, refined accommodations positioned so you can wake up, walk straight to the first tee, and lose yourself in the game.” This is the essence of intentional golf. When you remove distractions and fully immerse yourself, your focus sharpens, and your performance naturally improves.

Bringing the “Retreat Vibe” to Your Local Course

You don’t need to fly to New Zealand to experience a more focused, enjoyable round. You can create a similar atmosphere right at your local club with a few deliberate changes to your routine. I always tell my students that golf is as much a mental game as it is physical.

Drill 1: The Pre-Round “Sensory Reset”

Before you even step on the first tee, take a page from these luxury retreats. Instead of rushing, try to engage your senses. At Reynolds Lake Oconee, the vibe is described as “the ultimate “sport-and-splash” lifestyle. The trend here is the seamless transition from turf to surf.” While you might not have a lake to jump into, you can still transition mentally.

Here’s a drill: Arrive at the course 15-20 minutes earlier than usual. Instead of immediately hitting balls, find a quiet spot – maybe near a practice green or a scenic view on the course. Take five deep breaths, slowly inhaling and exhaling. Close your eyes for a moment. Listen to the sounds around you – the birds, the rustle of leaves, the distant thwack of a club. Feel the grass under your feet. This simple act helps quiet your mind and centers you, preparing you to ‘lose yourself in the game’ just like at Bandon Dunes.

Drill 2: The “Course as a Sanctuary” Walk-Through

How often do you really appreciate the beauty of the course you’re playing? Quivira Golf Club, for example, is described as having a “high-altitude adrenaline rush where the desert meets the deep blue of the Pacific in a way that feels almost otherworldly.” While your course might not have cliffside ocean views, it still offers natural beauty.

Try this: For your first three holes, dedicate yourself to seeing the course as a sanctuary, not just a challenge. As you walk between shots, look at the trees, the shape of the bunkers, the contours of the land. Instead of immediately thinking about your next shot, take a moment to notice something beautiful or interesting. This redirects your focus from solely results-oriented thinking to appreciating the experience, which in turn reduces pressure and allows for a more fluid swing.

Drill 3: Embracing “Remote Refinement” on the Practice Range

Te Arai Links in New Zealand champions “Remote Refinement,” an ultimate escape where “the Wi-Fi is ignored in favor of the stars.” This idea of disconnecting is powerful. How often do you check your phone during a practice session, or even between holes?

Here’s a drill: Dedicate an entire practice session (even just 30 minutes) to being completely unplugged. Put your phone on silent and in your bag, or better yet, leave it in the car. Focus intensely on each shot, observing the ball flight, the feel of the club, and the contact. When you finish a bucket of balls, take a short break, but instead of checking your phone, simply reflect on what went well and what you want to improve. This teaches you mindfulness, improving your ability to diagnose your swing and stay present, which is critical on the course.

“In 2026, golf’s most sophisticated sanctuaries emphasize bespoke experiences, from high-tech club fittings at the Kingdom of Golf at Reynolds Lake Oconee to post-round wellness at the Kohler Waters Spa at The Old Course Hotel.”

While we might not all have access to a Michelin-starred chef or 24-hour butler service, I believe we can integrate the spirit of these experiences into our golf. The “high-tech precision of next-gen practice facilities” mentioned in the article highlights the importance of data-driven improvement. Don’t shy away from technology available to you, whether it’s a launch monitor at your local range or simply videoing your swing on your phone. Combine that data with a calm, focused mindset, and you have a powerful recipe for improvement.

Golf is a journey, and every round is an opportunity to learn and grow, both as a golfer and as an individual. By adopting a mindset of appreciation and focus, and by creating your own ‘sanctuary’ on and off the course, you’ll find your game not only improves, but you’ll enjoy every moment that much more. Happy golfing!
