TaylorMade is changing the game when it comes to golf club fitting, particularly for their Qi35 drivers. The brand is now focusing not only on finding the right driver head for golfers but also on matching them with the correct shaft. The Fully Equipped team of Kris McCormack and Wade Maroun had the opportunity to visit TaylorMade’s Kingdom in Carlsbad, Calif., to witness this new fitting process firsthand. TaylorMade Kingdom Master Fitter Duane Anderson explained that after analyzing fitting data, he discovered that certain player types tend to fit better into specific shaft-bend profiles.
Anderson emphasized the importance of understanding when a player unloads the shaft during their swing. This information helps determine the appropriate shaft stiffness. Players who unload earlier are recommended stiffer profile shafts like the Fujikura Ventus Black, while those who release later may benefit from softer profile shafts like the Fujikura Ventus Red. The introduction of the Qi35 SelectFit heads with launch monitor reflectors has made it easier to collect accurate data on how players release the club, which further enhances the fitting process.
The selection of the right shaft is also influenced by a player’s release pattern and closure rate. Players with a high closure rate and hand release may prefer softer tipped shafts, while those with a body release and slower closure rate may lean towards stiffer tips. Maroun, with an active hand release, was fitted with a Ventus TR Red shaft, featuring a stiff butt section similar to the Ventus Black. The result was a driver that suited his release pattern, producing consistent straight shots.
In addition to shaft selection, Anderson focused on optimizing the driver head to dial in the trajectory. By adjusting factors like loft, CG location, and face angle, he was able to fine-tune Maroun’s driver for optimal performance. Switching to the Qi35 LS head and adjusting the loft helped improve Maroun’s ball flight, adding power and distance to his shots. The ability to customize the driver based on individual swing characteristics and trajectory preferences is a key factor in finding the perfect fit for each golfer.
The entire Qi35 family of drivers is now available for customization through Fairway Jockey, allowing golfers to tailor their equipment to their specific needs. TaylorMade’s approach to fitting drivers based on shaft profiles, release patterns, and swing characteristics represents a new standard in club customization. By prioritizing the fit between golfer and equipment, TaylorMade aims to help players improve their performance on the course. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a recreational golfer, finding the right driver can make a significant difference in your game.
