Alex Gaugert, who caddied at the RBC Canadian Open for Erik van Rooyen, is now competing in the U.S. Open Final Qualifying. Despite missing a few short putts, he managed to make some long putts and hit solid shots throughout the first round, finishing with a 4-under 67 at Cherry Hill Club. He is currently tied for 10th place out of the 66 players competing for seven spots into the U.S. Open at Pinehurst Resort’s No. 2 Course in North Carolina.
Gaugert previously shot a 69 and was co-medalist at the local qualifying event at the Country Club of Sioux Falls in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Despite not playing much golf leading up to the U.S. Open Final Qualifying, Gaugert seems to perform better when he plays less. His boss, Erik van Rooyen, has already secured a spot in the U.S. Open field, so Gaugert will be there to support him regardless of his own performance in the qualifier.
Gaugert’s brother, Austin, who caddies for Ryan Moore on the PGA Tour, may potentially caddie for van Rooyen if he qualifies for the U.S. Open. However, Gaugert mentioned that there is a possibility he might withdraw from the qualifier, depending on how things unfold. Despite the uncertain future, Gaugert is focused on giving his best and seeing what happens in the qualifier and possibly at the U.S. Open.
The U.S. Open Final Qualifying event witnessed some impressive performances from PGA Tour professionals. Davis Thompson, who birdied half the holes, shot a remarkable 8-under 63 in the first round, taking the lead ahead of Greyson Sigg and Mark Hubbard. Canadian Adam Svensson and Scotland’s Martin Laird also posted solid scores of 65, while reigning Canadian Amateur champion Ashton McCulloch matched their score.
Overall, the U.S. Open Final Qualifying event at Cherry Hill Club showcased a mix of talented golfers, including amateurs and professionals, vying for a spot in the prestigious U.S. Open field. Gaugert’s journey from caddying at the RBC Canadian Open to competing in the qualifier demonstrates the unpredictable nature of golf and the opportunities it presents to dedicated players. As the competition intensifies and the stakes get higher, Gaugert and other participants will strive to secure their place in the U.S. Open, showcasing their skills and determination on the course.
