The Rise of Howard University’s Golf Program: A New Era in Collegiate Sports

In a groundbreaking move for collegiate golf, NBA star Steph Curry made headlines in 2019 when he announced a significant financial commitment to establish men’s and women’s Division I golf teams at Howard University. This historically Black institution, steeped in academic tradition, located in Washington, D.C., took a bold step toward enhancing its athletic program, highlighting the intersection of sports, education, and community. Sponsored by Charles Schwab, the Charles Schwab Women’s Collegiate Invitational showcases how major sponsorships can help elevate emerging programs, like Howard’s.

Building a Strong Foundation

In early 2020, Sam Puryear, an experienced golf executive and coach with a profound track record, was appointed as the director of Howard’s newly-formed golf teams. Faced with an unprecedented pandemic and a lack of entrenched golf culture at Howard, Puryear embraced the challenges ahead. He quickly understood that developing a team would require not only exceptional athletes but also students dedicated to their academic pursuits. The combination of Steph Curry’s high-profile commitment and Puryear’s innovative leadership was a recipe for success.

Attracting Talented Athletes

During this formative period, three talented young women from different states—Makenna Rodriguez from South Florida, Jada Richardson from suburban Atlanta, and Kendall Jackson from greater Houston—found themselves drawn to Howard’s inaugural golf program. Meeting at freshman orientation in August 2021 marked the beginning of their journey together. The trio’s camaraderie and shared aspirations in both golf and academics became a central theme of their time at Howard. Their graduation in May 2025 signifies not just personal achievements but also the potential for the wider legacy of Howard’s new athletic programs.

Individual Aspirations, Collective Goals

As of now, these accomplished women are charting their respective paths post-graduation. Kendall Jackson is actively pursuing a professional golf career on the Epson Tour, while Jada Richardson prepares to enter Howard’s prestigious law school. Makenna Rodriguez is preparing to present groundbreaking research at the University of Pittsburgh, aiming for a Ph.D. and potentially a medical degree. Their dedication to excellence in sports and academics reveals a multifaceted approach to personal growth.

The Power of Friendship

The bond among Makenna, Jada, and Kendall extends beyond the golf course. Their shared experiences, including a memorable trip to St. Andrews, illustrate the deep relationships cultivated during their time at Howard. They not only support each other during competitions—like Kendall’s qualifier for the U.S. Women’s Amateur—but also in their everyday lives. The ability to stay connected, even while pursuing different paths, speaks to the strength of their friendship and commitment to each other’s success.

A Bright Future Ahead

Coach Puryear believes in the potential of all three women. He envisions Kendall’s bright future in professional golf, Makenna’s impactful contributions to science, and Jada’s future as a leading attorney. Their journeys are further inspired by prominent figures like Steph Curry and former Howard graduate Kamala Harris, cementing the university’s reputation and influence in the broader context of American culture.

The Brewing Legacy of Howard Golf

Howard’s potential as a formidable force in collegiate golf is bolstered by the proposed home course at Langston Golf Course, named after a revered Howard figure. Although currently undergoing renovations, establishing this as the team’s home would symbolize growth and the commitment to building a strong golf culture. The relationship with several private courses has been crucial, providing the team access to top-notch facilities for practice, enhancing the team’s competitive edge.

Diversity in Recruitment

Interestingly, Sam Puryear has discovered that Howard University sells itself in recruiting efforts. Aspiring female golfers of color are drawn to Howard for its welcoming environment—about 70% female and 70% Black—that fosters a sense of belonging. Many of these recruits come from diverse backgrounds but share a unified goal: to thrive both athletically and academically. This unique cultural ecosystem has helped elevate Howard’s visibility in collegiate golf, paving the way for future generations.

The Evolution of Team Dynamics

The evolution of the Howard golf program intertwines personal growth, community, and a focus on uplifting each other both on and off the course. This dynamic reflects a strong sense of purpose among athletes who seek to make meaningful changes in their respective fields. As Howard continues to nurture its golf teams, stories of friendship, support, and excellence will undoubtedly fill the collegiate athletics narrative.

The Bigger Picture

Over the next few years, Howard University’s golf program aims to establish a reputation for excellence, built on a foundation of strong relationships and shared aspirations. As they aspire to compete at the national level, this fresh wave of talent is essential for reshaping the perception of HBCU athletics. Through the leadership of passionate coaches like Sam Puryear, and the sheer determination of athletes like Kendall, Makenna, and Jada, Howard University is positioned to leave a lasting impact on collegiate golf and beyond.

The evolution of Howard University’s golf program is a testament to the transformative power of sports in education. With the unwavering support of stars like Steph Curry, dedicated coaches, and exceptional student-athletes, Howard is set to make waves in collegiate sports. As numerous eyes turn toward this burgeoning program, the lessons learned and shared experiences continue to inspire the next generation of athletes striving for greatness.
