Ohoopee Match Club, designed by Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner, stands out as one of the top new courses in recent years. Ranking among America’s 100 Greatest Courses, only five designs have debuted higher in the past 30 years, placing it alongside courses like Sand Hills and Friar’s Club. The course, located in Cobbtown, Georgia, was designed for match play, allowing the architects to focus on creating heroic strategies that complement the natural terrain.

The sandy soil near the Ohoopee River provided the perfect canvas for golf, with bold features and unique greens reminiscent of Pine Valley or Pinehurst. Hanse describes the course as having bunker shaping similar to that of Australian courses. Debuting on the rankings last year, Ohoopee Match Club has quickly become Hanse’s highest-ranked design. It remains to be seen whether the course will continue to climb in the rankings like Sand Hills and Friar’s Club or start to fall like other highly ranked courses.

Ohoopee Match Club has already inspired other match-play focused layouts and introduced elements like half-pars on the scorecard. This influence is likely to continue growing as more golfers experience the unique design and captivating features of the course. The club’s location in Georgia, known for its onions, is reflected in its onion logo, adding to the charm and character of the club. The course’s proximity to Atlanta and Vidalia makes it a convenient destination for golf enthusiasts looking for a memorable playing experience.
