As a golfer, it is important to warm up your body before hitting the links. Karen Jansen, a Master LPGA professional, stresses the importance of a solid warm-up routine for golfers of all skill levels. In a video posted to the LPGA Professionals YouTube channel, Jansen demonstrates a series of simple moves that can be done to prepare the body for the physical demands of a round of golf. These moves are designed to increase blood flow, activate muscles, and improve flexibility before teeing off. Even if you only have a few minutes to spare, these exercises can help you feel more prepared for your round.

One of the key warm-up moves recommended by Jansen is the cross-crawl, which involves a steady march coupled with a back-and-forth motion of the arms. This movement helps to increase blood flow and warm up the entire body. Another important warm-up exercise is the arm bicycle, which focuses on preparing the upper body for the golf swing by cycling the arms both forward and backward. Squats are also recommended as they activate the entire body and help to improve overall movement during the swing.

After warming up the body with general movements, it is important to focus on golf swing-specific stretches. Jansen recommends exercises like anchored rotation, hamstring stretches, core rotators, and shoulder rotators to help golfers prepare for the movements required in the golf swing. These stretches can help improve flexibility, range of motion, and muscle activation, leading to a more efficient swing on the course. By the end of the warm-up routine, golfers should feel fully prepared to hit the links and practice their swing motion at full speed.

Jansen emphasizes that starting a round of golf with tight muscles can lead to a short and choppy swing, as well as swing compensations. By incorporating a thorough warm-up routine into your pre-round routine, you can help prevent stiffness, improve your swing mechanics, and set yourself up for success on the course. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned golfer, taking the time to warm up properly can make a significant difference in your performance.

As a former member of Columbia’s first female varsity golf team, Jessica Marksbury understands the importance of preparation and proper warm-up routines for golfers. In her role as an Editor for Golf.com, Marksbury has highlighted the benefits of a solid warm-up routine and the impact it can have on a golfer’s performance. By following the advice of professionals like Karen Jansen and incorporating these simple warm-up exercises into your routine, you can improve your overall game and enjoy a more successful round of golf. Remember, a good warm-up is key to success on the golf course.
