Nestled in West Point, Mississippi, Mossy Oak golf course is a hidden gem designed by Gil Hanse, known for his work at the Rio Olympics. George Bryan, the visionary behind Mossy Oak, sought to create a golf course that embraced its natural surroundings and honored the local culture. The course takes advantage of the diagonal ridge that runs through the land and features a stream and irrigation lake that come into play throughout the round.

Hanse’s design at Mossy Oak is characterized by expansive fairways, strategic bunkering, and minimal trees, in line with his philosophy of creating challenging yet playable courses. The course offers a variety of memorable holes, including the par-3 11th with a green reminiscent of Augusta National and the unique par-5 17th with a massive fairway bunker named “George’s Bunker” after the course owner.

One of the standout holes at Mossy Oak is the par-3 15th, a mirror image of a hole at Streamsong Black, which pays homage to the iconic Calamity hole at Royal Portrush. The course also features the par-4 8th, a challenging hole that plays uphill between towering oaks, and the par-4 13th with a fairway that kicks left towards a stream, similar to Merion East.

Hanse’s bunkering at Mossy Oak is reminiscent of classic designs by Tillinghast, with large, sweeping bunkers that add visual interest and strategic challenge to the course. The sand used in the bunkers is earthen toned, blending seamlessly with the natural surroundings. Additionally, Bryan shared that the sand was trucked in from a nearby river, further adding to the authenticity of the course.

While Mossy Oak has received praise for its design and playability, there are a few areas of improvement noted by critics. The green on the par-4 second hole has bunkers that also serve as fairway bunkers on the par-5 fifth hole, creating a potential hazard for players. Additionally, the cart path on the par-4 13th hole intersects with the firing line of the 14th tee, a potential safety concern that may need to be addressed.

Overall, Mossy Oak Golf Course offers a unique playing experience that embraces both the natural beauty of its surroundings and the strategic challenges of the design. With its thoughtful layout, memorable holes, and distinct character, Mossy Oak has cemented its place as a must-play destination for golf enthusiasts looking for a one-of-a-kind golfing experience in Mississippi.
