Golf Course Superintendent’s Insight on Troubles with Grass Growth

If you find yourself struggling with growing grass in a challenging location, such as beneath an old maple tree, you are not alone. The struggle of maintaining turf in difficult spots is a common issue faced by homeowners, as well as golf course superintendents. On a tree-shaded site in Rochester, N.Y., a homeowner named Daniel Marr turned to a golf course superintendent for advice on how to improve the grass in his yard. Marr shared his frustrations with the grass strip between the sidewalk and the street where an old maple tree stood. Despite his efforts to plant grass successfully, the heat and shade from the tree seemed to hinder the growth, leading him to seek expert advice.

Kevin Doyle, a field staffer in the Northeast region for the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, provided insights into the challenges Marr was facing with his grass. One of the significant issues in maintaining grass near roadways in Rochester is the use of salt during inclement weather, leading to high-sodium soil that can cause turf failure. Doyle recommended digging up and sifting the soil to distribute sodium concentrations more evenly and diluting it with water during watering. However, completely eliminating the sodium from the soil is difficult, making turf maintenance challenging in such locations.

Doyle also addressed the impact of the old maple tree on the grass strip. Trees and grass often compete for sunlight, water, and nutrients, making it challenging for grass to thrive in shaded areas. Doyle suggested trimming tree limbs to allow more sunlight through, but the effectiveness depends on the tree’s location in relation to the turf. If the tree blocks sunlight from the south, removing it entirely may be the best option for promoting grass growth. Additionally, choosing grass varieties that tolerate shade, such as fescue, can contribute to the grass’s survival in low-light conditions.

In conclusion, Daniel Marr’s struggle with growing grass in a challenging location highlights the importance of considering various factors, such as soil composition, tree shading, and grass variety selection, in turf maintenance. Seeking advice from turf-care experts, like golf course superintendents, can provide valuable insights and recommendations for improving grass growth and maintaining a lush lawn year-round. Despite the challenges of growing grass in difficult spots, with the right knowledge and techniques, homeowners can enhance their lawn’s health and appearance, creating a beautiful outdoor space to enjoy.
