Golfers and caddies concur: The crucial number you should focus on

In the world of professional golf, players often appear to be studying intensely before hitting an important shot. They are seen with papers, books, levels, and compasses, all in an effort to ensure they are making the best decision possible. But what are they actually looking at? The answer is a cover number, a crucial figure that helps make every other number on the course make sense and ultimately leads to better golf performance.

A cover number is essentially the distance needed to clear an obstacle in front of the green, such as a bunker or water hazard. This number is not always the same as the total distance to the front of the green, as obstacles are often off-center or to the side. By knowing your cover number and choosing the appropriate club based on that distance, you can strategically navigate your way to better outcomes on the course.

For example, if you are approaching a pin that is 173 yards away with a bunker short right, the cover number to clear the bunker may be 168 yards. By adding a buffer for potential mishits, such as missing 13 yards short or long of your target, you can determine that you need to hit your 181-yard club to reach the 173-yard pin. This approach ensures that even your average shots will leave you in a favorable position on the green.

The key to utilizing cover numbers effectively is understanding how they apply to your game and making adjustments accordingly. By incorporating this strategy into your game plan, you can avoid falling short of obstacles, reduce the number of bogeys or double bogeys, and improve your overall performance on the course. Cover numbers offer a simple yet powerful way to approach each shot with confidence and precision, leading to better outcomes and a more enjoyable golfing experience.

To further enhance your understanding of cover numbers and how they can positively impact your game, it is recommended to watch instructional videos or seek guidance from experienced golf professionals. By honing your skills in this area and consistently applying cover numbers to your shots, you can elevate your performance and optimize your strategy on the course. Incorporating this valuable tool into your golfing repertoire can lead to more consistent and satisfying results, ultimately enhancing your overall enjoyment of the game.
