Golf is experiencing a golden age, with more Americans playing the sport than ever before. The National Golf Foundation’s State of the Industry report revealed that over 28 million Americans played traditional “green-grass” golf in 2024, marking a seventh consecutive annual increase. With off-course golf included, that number jumps to over 47 million, showing a 38% leap from 2019. This growth is evident in the increased interest in golf course development and the fewest course closings in 20 years. The positive perception of the game, along with its numerous benefits such as physical exercise, social interaction, and time spent outdoors, has contributed to this surge in popularity.

The winners of the week included Sepp Straka, who secured his third victory on the PGA Tour at the American Express, and Tyrrell Hatton, who won the Dubai Desert Classic on the DP World Tour. Ernie Els also emerged victorious at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship on the PGA Tour Champions, while Justin Hastings of the Cayman Islands triumphed at the Latin America Amateur Championship, earning a spot in prestigious tournaments like the U.S. Open and the Masters. These players showcased their skill and resilience on the course, earning well-deserved victories.

Other standout performers in the world of golf included Justin Thomas, Jason Day, and young pro Blades Brown, who made waves with his performance on the PGA Tour. Despite not securing a win, Thomas displayed consistent strong play, while Day ended a podium drought with a third-place finish. Brown, a 17-year-old pro, impressed with his talent and maturity on the tour, despite missing the 54-hole cut. These players represent the depth of talent in professional golf and the bright future of the sport.

In recent golf news, the appointment of a new CEO at LIV Golf, the extension of Tiger Woods’ partnership with Bridgestone, and Tom McKibbin’s potential move to LIV have sparked interest within the golf community. Additionally, the Genesis Invitational will be held at a different location this year due to fires near the original course, and notable players like Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele have withdrawn from upcoming tournaments. These developments set the stage for an intriguing season as players navigate changes in schedules, partnerships, and competitive landscapes.

One significant development to watch is LIV Golf’s broadcasting deal with Fox, which will showcase the league’s events on major networks. This partnership will provide valuable exposure for LIV Golf and offer insights into the league’s popularity and audience reach. As LIV continues to establish itself in the golf world, this broadcasting deal will be a key factor in shaping its future trajectory and competitiveness with established tours like the PGA Tour. The audience response to these broadcasts will serve as a crucial data point in negotiations and discussions surrounding the future of professional golf.

As the golf season progresses, one thing to keep an eye on is the performance of players like William Mouw, who faced a challenging moment on the course by making a 13 on a hole. Despite the setback, Mouw’s experience highlights the unpredictable nature of golf and the resilience required to navigate difficult situations on the course. This story serves as a reminder of the mental and emotional aspects of the game and the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity.

Overall, the state of golf is thriving, with increased participation, exciting competition, and continued growth in the industry. As more players take up the sport and showcase their skills on various tours, the future of golf looks bright. With the support of fans, sponsors, and broadcasters, golf is poised to continue its upward trajectory and provide entertainment and inspiration to audiences around the world.
