Professional golfer Thompson sought help from Craig Allan at Sea Island’s Golf Performance Center to address issues with his iron play. Despite performing well with his driver, Thompson struggled with distance control and catching fliers out of the rough due to low spin. Allan suggested three solutions: weaken the lofts of his irons, test higher-spinning golf balls, and try different iron heads and shafts. Initially, Thompson opted for a higher-spinning golf ball, which improved his iron play but negatively impacted his driver performance.

Thompson noticed a decline in his driver stats after using the higher-spinning golf ball and decided to switch back to his previous ball after the Valspar Championship. He worked with Allan to find the right combination of iron heads and shafts to increase spin and distance control. After testing various options, they settled on the Titleist 620 MB irons equipped with True Temper Dynamic Gold Mid Tour Issue X100 shafts, which offered slightly higher spin and launch compared to his previous setup. The goal was to restore his dominance with the driver while improving his iron play.

The testing process involved two weeks of trying different iron head-and-shaft combinations with the lower spinning golf ball. Ultimately, Thompson and Allan made the decision to switch to a different set of irons and shafts to address the spin and distance control issues. Thompson expressed his desire to focus on the golf ball as opposed to changing his swing or technique. By working closely with Allan and testing different options, they were able to find a solution that improved Thompson’s overall performance on the golf course.

Thompson’s experience highlights the importance of proper equipment fitting and customization for professional golfers. The collaboration between Thompson and Allan at the Golf Performance Center showcases the level of detail and dedication required to optimize performance at the highest level of the sport. By making strategic adjustments to his equipment, Thompson was able to overcome challenges with his iron play and driver performance. This process serves as a valuable lesson for golfers of all levels, emphasizing the impact that equipment choices can have on overall results.

In conclusion, the collaboration between Thompson and Allan at Sea Island’s Golf Performance Center resulted in significant improvements to Thompson’s game. By addressing issues with his iron play and driver performance through equipment testing and customization, Thompson was able to find solutions that enhanced his overall performance on the course. This story underscores the importance of finding the right equipment setup to maximize potential and achieve success in professional golf. The dedication and expertise of individuals like Craig Allan play a crucial role in helping players like Thompson reach their full potential in the highly competitive world of professional golf.
