Revival of Coffeetree Country Club: A New Era for Golf in Elkhorn, Nebraska

Introduction

After two decades of dormancy, a golf course in Nebraska is set for a remarkable revival. Construction has officially begun on Coffeetree Country Club, a new private golf facility located in Elkhorn, Nebraska, on the western edge of the Omaha metropolitan area. This ambitious project aims to replace the long-closed Skyline Woods Country Club, which shut down in 2005 due to financial difficulties.

Project Overview

Coffeetree Country Club is being designed by renowned seven-time PGA Tour winner and Golf Channel commentator Peter Jacobsen. His design will incorporate five brand-new holes, while preserving the essence of the remaining 13 holes from the original Skyline Woods layout.

Designer Profile: Peter Jacobsen

Peter Jacobsen is taking on his first project in the upper Midwest after successfully designing courses such as:

  • Member Course at the Golf Club of Houston
  • Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande, California

His approach to the Coffeetree layout aims to blend modern golfing experience with the classic charm of its predecessor.

Community Reaction

Residents of Elkhorn and surrounding areas are welcoming the new development with enthusiasm. The former Skyline Woods Country Club had become an eyesore over the years, garnering attention for legal disputes tied to its previous ownership, including a Nebraska Supreme Court case.

Historical Context

  • 1960s: Dennis Circo and his father acquired Skyline Woods.
  • 1990: Sold to American Golf Corporation.
  • 2005: After a series of ownership changes and financial troubles, the course closed permanently.
  • 2023: Efforts for redevelopment were initially proposed by Circo but did not materialize.
  • November 2025: Developer Brett Clure purchased the property, leading to the current construction.

Local residents express relief and excitement for the upcoming course. As Alex Beckwith, a former Skyline Woods player, shared: “You hate to see something in a nicer part of town run down. It’d be nice to see it come back to its former glory.” Robyn Vance, a local resident, added, “We just couldn’t be more thrilled.”

Planned Amenities

The new Coffeetree Country Club will feature:

  • 18-hole championship golf course
  • 27,000 square-foot clubhouse
  • Restaurant
  • Resort-style pool
  • Golf simulators
  • Tennis courts
  • Pickleball facility

The initial phase of the project will focus on the golf course, followed by the development of the clubhouse and recreational amenities.

Conclusion

As Coffeetree Country Club takes shape, it promises to revitalize not only the local golfing landscape but also the community spirit in Elkhorn, Nebraska. With a well-respected designer at the helm and strong community support, the future looks bright for this exciting new venture.
